Why I Chose Anthropology As My Major

Picking a major in college is super confusing at times. Cause well what you choose decides what kind of job you have and lifestyle. Some people choose a major cause they are passionate about it or they just want to make money. The best advice my mother told me was to pick something I love and cause if you love it you will go far. She told me the people who pick something they hate will be miserable and unhappy.

First thing I did when deciding a major was think back to everything I love and enjoy doing. I realized I loved to read about culture and history. I thought maybe a double major but realized I did not really want to do that. When deciding on a double major I realized I wanted to graduate early. Which is up to the person to decide if they want to go for longer or finish earlier. For me I want to finish early because financially it saves me money for graduate school.

The next decision was well history or cultural studies? I love both equally but anthropology, the study of humankind, is really broad. Anthropology can be biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology, cultural anthropology or archaeology. Which I won't have to decide till graduate school thank goodness. But my advice to people is think about the future. What do you want to do with your life? Are you wanting to own a business or maybe be in education of any level? For me I realized how much I loved telling people about my major and how I would love to lecture all day about anthropology to people. I then asked my mom about her opinion and she agreed tat I would be good at that.

For all the people trying to decide their major think about what you enjoy in life. Don't think about how much money you will make. Instead think about how you can impact others and the world. I was told by someone once don't think about the present think about the legacy you will leave once your gone. I have asked myself what do I want others to remember about me? I want to be a college professor and hopefully inspire students to major in anthropology and preserve culture. So to all the people about to start their freshman year this fall really think about what you love doing. Don't pick a major just to pick one. Take some classes your first semester to help deciding what you like , and talk to your advisor they will be able to help you a lot. Also if you are making bad grades in classes for the major you picked you might want to pick another. Cause you don't want to be stressed out over a major you hate.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
