Recently, I had the pleasure of going to Chance the Rapper's show at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. I was actually blown away by how amazing it was! His show was uplifting and positive and not only is he insanely talented, he's also hilarious, draws a hell of a crowd, and is now a tough act to follow when it comes to rap concerts in my book. I did some research and found a few reasons why Chance is actually such a cool cat.
1. He gives lectures at Harvard.
Last year, Chance travelled to a Harvard University classroom to give a lecture and answer questions about his life where he talked about his hopes of growing old with his friends in Chicago, what inspires him, and misogyny in hip hop. To read more about his lecture click here.
2. He loves his baby mama.
Finding a photo of the two together is a rarity, but it's no secret that Chance and his girlfriend Kirsten are totally cute. They just recently welcomed their first daughter into the world, and in his song "All We Got", he writes:
"Tryna turn my baby mama to my fiance, she like music, she from Huston like Auntie Yonce. Man, my daughter couldn't have a better mother. If she ever find another, he better love her"
SO CUTE.
3. He doesn't belong to a label, and he releases his music for free.
Apparently Chance has a major dislike for labels and how controlling they can be. He's opted out of taking that route, and paved the way to his success all on his own. He's released all of his mixtapes for free and his income comes only from touring and merchandise.
4. Boy can SINGGGGG, dance, play the piano, and put on a hell of a show.
Chance is a true performer. He dances around the stage, brings out a gorgeous piano and plays it, and sings his heart out. He interacts with the crowd, laughing and cracking jokes, making concert-goers feel right at home like you've been friends all along.
5. He's an activist.
Chance won the 2014 Chicago's Outstanding Youth of the Year Award from the mayor of Chicago for actively fighting to combat gun violence. He's also met with President Obama this past April to discuss the "My Brother's Keeper" challenge, which is an initiative to promote intervention by civic leaders in the lives of youth of color to address their unique challenges and to promote racial justice.
6. He's just a great dude.
Chance isn't afraid to talk about God and is often vocal about his faith both on, and off the stage. He includes children's church choirs on his songs, and writes music that promotes positivity and faith. He comes from a great family, and it definitely shows.I mean, just look at him..how can you not love him.
