Honestly, I don’t know why I keep watching these horrible, gory films that leave me terrified and unable to sleep. I watch these movies and without fail and get no sleep that night. Every slight noise I hear is either a haunted spirit or a crazy murderer who is going to chop me up into little pieces. Logically, it’s the air conditioning and no one is out to get me.
You might be wondering why I keep doing this to myself. Why I willingly pay to watch these movies that I am pretty convinced I don’t even really like that much. I have come to the conclusion that I am either insane or like the thrill of it all. Every time something, or someone, pop out I let out a faint scream. Every time someone is being brutally murdered, I end up hiding my face under the covers. But horror and thriller movies never fail to put me on the edge of my seat.
When Blake Lively was attempting to escape the jaws of a vicious shark, I don’t think I blinked the entire time. When the multiple spirits in all of the Insidious movies terrorized families, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Sure comedies and romance movies are good, but horror and thriller provide a certain adrenaline rush that comedies and romances don’t. The way that horror and thriller movies can affect my life outside of the movie theatre is what makes them so addicting. Its like a car accident. It’s so horrific and graphic that you just can’t look away even though you should.
I watch these movies knowing that I will be scared to go in the ocean and I will need to sleep with a night light for the next two weeks. Even though I know all of this will happen, I still choose to buy a $12 ticket because I can’t wait to see what happens. I still sit on my couch at 12 a.m. alone in my apartment and watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Netflix knowing that I won’t be able to sleep the entire night. The thrill of horror and thriller movies is what keeps people coming back. It is the exact same reason that people pay hundreds of dollars to go to events like Howl O’ Scream and Halloween Horror Nights. I don’t think that anyone likes the idea of people dressing up and chasing them around with fake chainsaws, but people still go including myself.
Knowing that I pay money to be scared doesn’t make a ton of sense, but the feeling of adrenaline pumping as you walk through that haunted house and things jump out at you at every corner is thrilling. Scary movies might keep me awake at night and have me thinking that I’m either haunted or going to get murdered, but that won’t stop me from rushing to the movie theaters every time a good horror or thriller movie comes out.
