Why I Call My Mom Everyday

She's the one I go to for everything.

When I started my freshman year of college, I was overjoyed. I was so excited to start this crazy new journey of adulthood. But there was one slight thing that I did differently than others. I called my mom every day, sometimes more than once a day. When I would tell my peers how much I called my mom, they would question me and ask “Why? You just got away from her, she doesn’t need to know everything.”

They’re probably right, she doesn’t need to know everything, but I still tell her everything. Why? Because she’s my best friend and that’s what best friends do. Some of my roommates would go weeks without talking to their moms, and I have no idea how they do that. My mom and I have a special bond that I never want to break.

I think one of the reasons we are so close is because my mom’s mom died too soon, and they had a very close relationship. So, after that, I’ve always clung to her. Family has always been important to me because I’ve lost so many in the almost two decades that I’ve been alive.

I try to cherish as much time I have with my family as possible. If that means I call my mom while I’m microwaving ramen just so she can keep me company or I call her to tell her I’m dropping out of college because it’s annoying, so be it. Either way, I always know she will answer my call and she will be there. I can always count on her encouraging words or funny stories of my dad to brighten my day.

Family is the most important thing we have in this world besides our relationship with the Lord. I want to keep my family the most important thing because, at the end of the day, it’s all we have. Whether you have a close relationship with your mom or not, call her, tell her you’re fine. It will make her feel 10 times better; I promise.

Whether you’re 18, 28, 38, or 48, or however old, and you still have the privilege to still call your mom, do it. My mom no longer has that opportunity to call hers, and I know she’d love to. Don’t take your mom for granted. She’s your mother for a reason, she loves you, so call her. I call my mom every day because I know she loves me, she won’t judge me, and she’s my best friend. I can’t imagine life without her. I love you, mom.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
