I go through show cycles. I use to be obsessed with British murder mysteries but lately I've really needed good comedies that don't require much effort but make me fall in love with characters. HTGAWM almost gave me a stroke multiple times in just the first season, so I had to quit that like a bad habit. My friends wanted me to try out "Scandal" or "Daredevil," and those are probably great but they are so intense. I liked "Jessica Jones," but her flashbacks were too triggering for me. I have so much stress and "intensity" in my life that I just want a show that I could be effortlessly and joyfully absorbed in. For a while "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" was that show, but it ended all too soon no matter how hard I tried to restrain from binge-watching. I almost need the comedy. Netflix is my comic relief. Well I had gone a little while without that comic relief and then my roommate told me how desperately I needed to watch "Broad City." Watching "Broad City" makes me love my poor, college, adult life more.
1. Abbi and Ilana are BFF goals.
It's a running joke in the show about how much Ilana is in love with Abbi in a best-friend way. They tell each other everything and do absolutely everything together. They complete each other. When I watch BC, I want to go hug my BFF and tell her how much I love her face.
2. They have inspired me to have more fun with everyday things.
The amount of laughter on the show, and the amount of laughter it provokes is amazing. Ilana and Abbi get into crazy situations and make it out together with a laugh and a hug. Every minute detail of the day is turned into an adventure. Whether they are sleeping on a New York rooftop or going to a dog wedding, there is never a dull moment.
3. BC is so sex positive, it's crazy.
Abbi is not as outgoing as Ilana, but they both get it on and have no shame in their game. Their sexcapades can get hilarious. The show talks about masturbation so much, and leads a hysterical conversation that is usually kept to a whisper between most girlfriends.
4. It doesn't f*ck with conventional beauty.
Every character on BC doesn't fit into the popular conventions. These characters are real. The body types and styles on BC do not belong to Ken dolls, except for Trey, and relationships aren't confined by stereotypical "hot with hot" match-ups. Everyone is on the same level.
5. BC addresses real issues.
Whether Jaime is educating Ilana about cultural appropriation, or Abbi and Ilana are fighting cat-calling, "Broad City" opens discussion for real-life issues.
6. "Broad City" is a queen-size dose of feminism.
With its body and sex positivity, and dialogue that really uplifts each other's characters, its impossible to not feel empowered.
Binge watch Broad City—now.
