A few months ago, I did an article featuring some of my favorite TV shows. Broad City was included in this list. I wish I had discovered this show a few years back, but I’m glad I know about it now. When I first began watching it, I kept wondering what the hell was going on.
We have two main characters, Abbi Abrams and Ilana Wexler. They are two twenty-something young women living in NYC. The show focuses on the highs and lows of their lives, but it does it in a different way that isn’t seen very often on typical TV shows. These girls have sex with whoever they want, whenever they want (feminism!) and they aren’t afraid to tell it like it is to cat-calling strangers.
The thing I love most about their friendship is obviously the dynamic of it all. They are like sisters, and their personalities complement each other so very well. Most people who have seen the show may feel that Ilana is the more bold and brash girl out of the duo, but Abbi has plenty of amazing qualities as well.
One of my favorite episodes that truly highlights their friendship is “The Last Supper,” the finale of season 1. In this episode, it is Abbi’s birthday and the girls go out to eat at a very fancy restaurant. Ilana orders several helpings of seafood, even though she’s allergic to it. She nonchalantly mentions it to Abbi while also explaining how she brought her Epi Pen with her. Who does something like that? Ilana Wexler.
Of course, she ends up having an allergic reaction but Abbi accidentally stabs herself in the thigh with the Epi Pen. Together, the girls end up in the hospital.
The scene of them sharing a hospital bed while also sharing a dessert from the restaurant, while describing their bucket-list, is such a cute scene. It gets cuter when they are released and they engage in more girl talk. The very end scene truly depicts what a great friendship the girls have.
