Happy Black History Month!

This month has lost its shine. It's purpose is often forgotten; overshadowed by the roses and chocolates of Saint Valentine's day. After all, 28 days can't possibly be enough time to remember a full history of a people. American people.

Its kind of hard to talk about American history without talking about African Americans.

So I even question why its seperate. Truth is black history is American history. And to disassociate the two is a disservice to all Americans. Black history is always talked about outside of traditional American history. Like it was an afterthought.

It's sometimes taught in schools as an elective or seen as some exotic foreign culture to be studied. This epidemic is perpetuated in school systems even up until higher education. It baffles me because I see the basis of American history with blacks at the center. The United States would not be the same without it. Black Americans have literally built this country.

Since my ancestors first stepped foot on this country's soil they have worked it, built houses on it, maintained crops and cattle and even nourished children not from their own descent.

The only reason Black History Month even exists is because we Americans need to be reminded of a not so squeaky clean story.

So why is black history American history?

Because they are the same.

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
