Why Biomedical Engineering?

I recently decided what I want to major in when I go to college and possibly what I want my future career to be. As far back as I can think, I've always wanted to be a doctor and help people. But recently I have been doubting my dreams of becoming a doctor, due to various personal reasons. So, I hopped on my laptop and began to research potential majors that I would be interested in and good at. That's how I found biomedical engineering.

Biomedical engineering is the application of biological and health skills to engineering. Biomedical engineers design and build tools and machinery that doctors and other medical professionals use to treat patients.

When I first read about this area, I heard a buzzer go off in my brain. This was my true calling. Biomedical engineering combined my interests in both math and science along with the growing field of technology. It also required extensive communication and leadership skills, which I am proud to possess. But most of all this field actively worked to improve the lives of people, which has been my aspiration ever since I was a child.

Another reason that I chose biomedical engineering was the amount of options that were open to me after graduation. With a degree in biomedical engineering, I could work in many areas which include research and design of medical tools and prosthetics, development old machinery, and even marketing. Graduates with biomedical engineering degrees have also gone on to medical schools and have become doctors. This is possibly the most important reason for me to pursue a degree in this field because I know that I still would have the opportunity and the potential to be a doctor after getting my degree.

Picking my degree has thus far been the best decision of my high school career. I know have a clear goal in mind and a path towards it. I can now focus on school and my other activities as opposed to asking myself the question: "What am I doing with my life?"

As always, I never know what my future holds for me but as of now I can work towards my goal and hope and pray for the best.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
