Why Beyoncé Had Every Right To Be At The 2016 CMA Awards

The country music community should celebrate the fact that other singers are starting to want to be a part of the country genre.

Why Beyoncé Had Every Right To Be At The 2016 CMA Awards

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the 50th annual Country Music Association Awards. It was an experience I will never forget and I loved every bit of it. The next day however, I opened up my phone and saw many negative comments about Beyoncé's performance. Some comments were racist, and some were just negative in general. On the drive in to work on Thursday morning, I turned on XM radio channel 56, the country station. and heard the radio announcer agreeing that Beyoncé should not have been at the CMAs. I disagree.

To start, the Country Music Association Awards is meant to celebrate the biggest country music achievements of the year. I think the fact that Beyoncé, a pop star, wrote a country song is a big achievement for country music and only goes to show how great the genre really is. The Country Music Association has celebrated the fact that country musicians such as Garth Brooks, and Taylor Swift have increased appreciation and awareness for the genre by performing worldwide and getting country songs on pop radio stations. They honored Kenney Chesney with this award during the 2016 CMA's for his global performances and record sales after getting the song "Setting the World on Fire" featuring pop star Pink on pop radio. The pop genre welcomes country with open arms, so why can't the country genre welcome a pop star with the same courtesy. The country genre continued to play Taylor Swift songs on the country radio stations even after she transitioned to playing pop music, so what is the big deal with letting a pop star have some country songs too?

Secondly, to all the people arguing that she took time away from real country musicians at the awards ceremony, I would like to remind you that she was performing with the Dixie Chicks, real country musicians. She did not take any time away from country musicians seeing that country musicians were on stage during the entire performance. I'd like to point out here that the song Beyoncé performed was in fact a jazzy country song from her new album Lemonade called "Daddy Lessons." Also, who is to say what a country musician versus pop star is? If Beyoncé has a country song, doesn't that make her a country singer too, the same as how Taylor swift is considered both country and pop?

Thirdly, I would like to point out that Beyoncé was not the only cross-genre group to perform at the 2016 CMA Awards. The Pentatonix performed an acapella version of "Jolene" with Jennifer Nettles. No one complained that the Pentatonix took attention from Jennifer Nettles.

As for those that made the racist comments? Lets flashback to when Charley Pride won Male Vocalist of the Year in 1971 and 1972 and when Darius Rucker took home the New Artist of the Year Award in 2009.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
