Optimism, I believe, is a gift that is given to the best of us. Throughout the strengths and trials of the heart, we stand as soldiers fighting on the grounds of life, trying our best to win the battles that the world throws at us.
Unfortunately, as a society, we tend to focus on our losses. The fights that we could not win, no matter how hard we tried.
Rape. Murder. Genocide. Abuse. War.
How often do you see these mentioned in the news?
Likely, almost every day.
We hear about the most unfortunate circumstances in any news media. And on the odd chance that something positive happens and it gets coverage, often people will try to see the negatives of it, searching for the bad in the good.
Why is it that we feel the urge to do this? Eons ago crime was much more rampant than it is today. Yet people still view the world as scary and dangerous.
Of course, there is always the feeling of security that comes with learning about bad things. When criminals can get locked away for their dastardly deeds, we feel a release- one less person to take away our liberties.
But then there are the instances when a criminal goes astray.
When a horrid story makes the news, often it goes without resolution. We hear about something horrible, but without any closure to be given. Stories come and go based on their relevance in the news media, and rarely does a story make a comeback. The media is very formulaic with how they treat news, with big stories being headliners for a few days, then moving onto the next tragedy. It is why we don't hear much about Hurricane Katrina today, even though New Orleans is still struggling to recover what it had lost after the storm.
So then, what about the good?
Wonderful things happen everyday to people of all caliber around the world. Children are born. Marriages happen. Developments are made for businesses and buildings. Jobs arise. Doctors and scientists work to find cures for diseases.
Why do these things get second banana to the unfortunate?
The fact of the matter is, horrible things happen so less often than wonderful things. Understandably we want to know things that happen rarely more than things that happen everyday, but it harms us.
Society seems to love the idea of being in danger. We want to protect ourselves from the bad, but in doing so, we eliminate the idea of the good.
People constantly pick fights with each other over petty things that cause tension. Just think of the amount of people on Facebook who constantly argue with each other over politics and war.
Safety is a necessary precaution, of course. But when is it when the bad is too much?
Even with all my rambling... I do truly believe that the world is good. Like I said, just being able to see the miracles that happen every day truly outweigh the bad things that happen.
Each and every day, people are fighting against the bad things that have happened to them, and one by one, we as people try to overcome the negatives, by joining together to make a positive.
We stand together. Whenever a bad thing happens, someone is always there to try and help you out.
Making improvements constantly, every step of the way. There is always someone there to move on with you.
And with that, we can truly achieve our potential. Because the world is a place always improving, always getting better.
We can beat all our demons. We just have to stay positive.
Because the world is a good place.
