Why I Believe All Lives Matter

The reason I stand behind the All Lives Matter movement is because I believe just what the title of the movement so clearly states: ALL. Lives. Matter.

It seems that our country is in a bit of a crisis. Now I know this is a pretty broad statement considering that presently there are a number of events that could be considered "a crisis" in our wonderful nation. However I am not speaking of the financial disaster, the equally disastrous Presidential electorates or even the recent tragic news of Angelina and Brad's divorce (sorry, I had to throw that last one in there).

The crisis I speak of is much bigger than our financial state, our next leader, and our most renowned couple's split. The crisis I speak of is the crisis of our country's character.

Again I have made a broad statement here, so let me clarify. It has come to my attention that the citizens of our homeland have become divided. They have become divided over prejudice, unjustified police brutality and outright discrimination against the African American community. This has all sparked the infamous Black Lives Matter Movement.

In response to this movement, many people (most broadly publicized, white people) have claimed that all lives matter leading to the even more infamous All Lives Matter movement.

Although this movement has been endorsed by rich politicians and privileged kids alike, I would like to weigh in on the reasons that I support this movement in particular above the rest.

I will just go ahead and tell you now that the reasons I support All Lives Matter is not because I am offended by the African American community's Black Lives Matter campaign. It is not because I have grown up affluent and consequently somehow unaware of the absolute state of catastrophe that our nation is in regarding race relations. And it is DEFINITELY not because I am not African American.

The reason I stand behind the All Lives Matter movement is because I believe just what the title of the movement so clearly states: ALL. Lives. Matter.

Now I know that the purpose of BLM is not to say that black lives matter any more than others. However, the fact that the movement so obviously, so intentionally separates the lives of African Americans from the lives of the rest of the ethnicities is the problem in itself.

We live in a nation that is supposed to be a melting pot, where differences of culture are not only welcomed but celebrated. This is a place where people of all religions, beliefs, social classes and colors are supposed to be able to come together as one and live in harmony. It's supposed to be a place where this separation does not exist.

This has obviously not been the case lately.

There has been so much wrong done, so much hatred on all sides of this tragedy. The passion people feel towards it all is blinding. My heart truly just hurts for all of the people who have been affected by the violence that has taken place during recent events.

So what is the solution here? What do we do about a problem with so many sides, so many people affected and so much hurt?

We go to the root of the problem, and we fix the crisis. We fix our country's character.

Unlike a large majority, I do not feel that drastic measures need to be taken to solve the race relations issue. While the problem is huge indeed, the resolution has less to do with grand fixes to the nation and more to do with minor adjustments to every person's mindset, approach and character.

The discrimination against any minority race will not be solved by laws, riots or violent protests. The problem will be solved the day that all people realize that the color of our skin does not determine our worth. The problem will be solved the day that people put personal integrity over prejudice and see that the lines that currently separates us are nonexistent. This problem will end when all sides stop looking at color and assuming character and begin to show real character in the way we judge other people's. This problem will only end when we all realize that every single life has meaning, and that every single life matters.

The Battle Between College And My Mental Health

College isn't easy, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it at the rate my mental health is going.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
