There are so many things that I have done in my life that make me feel as if I have accomplished something. These are the things I have done that made me smile. These are the things that I will always treasure and remember. But none of these things even come close to the feeling of being a volunteer. There are so many options and opportunities to be a volunteer.
1. It's Good for You
Not only mentally, but physically too. Volunteering helps to reduce stress and makes you healthier. You are focusing on doing better for someone else which takes away tension from your own life.
2. You Can Gain Professional Experience
I volunteered at a retirement home and it really opened my eyes. I loved spending the day with the elderly people and listening to their stories. Although to everyone else it seemed like I was just job shadowing, I was actually volunteering for a great reason.
3. You Come Together with Other People
Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes. Everyone you meet is volunteering for a reason and finding out what those reasons are brings you closer together with them. Take a fire company for example, everyone is there to help out and save as many lives as they possibly can. For me, becoming the volunteer fire queen was the best decision I have ever made. I was a part of something bigger than me.
4. You Get a Chance to Give Back
This is one of the most important things about volunteering. You may or may not realize it, but the amount of loving and caring that comes out of your community is incredibly high. After a day of volunteering, you truly feel better about yourself.
5. You Make a Difference
Every single person can make a difference when they volunteer. One person can make a difference and everyone should try to and that is exactly what happens when you choose to be a volunteer. After all, the greatest reward for doing is the opportunity to do more.
