Why Being Stubborn Is, More Often Than Not, A Good Thing

If you know me at all, you would know that I am one of the most stubborn people that you will ever meet. When people think of me, they think of someone who is decisive, honest, and most importantly stubborn as a mule. While many people may think that could be a pretty big insult, I think of it as a pretty big compliment. The term stubborn is often put in the wrong light because of the idea that people like me will not change their mind for anything comes off in a way like we refuse to take anyone’s input, which is completely false. I like to think of it as an independent variable. I am writing this article to eliminate this horrendous stereotype and explain that being stubborn is not as bad as people make it seem.

Stubborn People Know Exactly What They Want

People often mistake stubbornness with self-centeredness, and that my friend is absolutely not the case. The way I see it is that when I have to make a decision, I know what I want right away and I am not swayed by anyone else. I like to think of it as sticking t my values and beliefs. When I see something that I like or something that I want, I go after it because I am determined and I know what I deserve.

Stubborn People Have Tendencies of Paving Their Own Path

So I have this little thing called intuition. I have always been able to separate myself from others even when I knew that I would be judged for it. Similar to the last bullet, I know what I want and I know what I have to do to get what I want, and if that means I have to be different then so be it. I have never really been influenced by others and I am proud of that.

Stubborn People Do Not Have “Impossible” in Their Vocabulary

The word impossible has never intimidated me. People who are stubborn often enjoy defying the odds for the sake of doing and/or getting what they desire. There is nothing more encouraging than when somebody tells me that I can’t do something. My reaction? Just watch me do it then.

Stubborn People Are Willing to Sacrifice

This summer, I am working seven days a week so that I can not only complete a college-required internship, but so that I can also make money to save up for future endeavors. While working 50+ hours a week is slightly less than enjoyable, I would not have it any other way because it will be worth it in the end. I am more than willing to give up my social life, my somewhat-normal sleep schedule, and my tan to benefit in the future. And many other stubborn people would probably do the same.

Stubborn People Persevere

Through many hard times in life, my stubbornness has carried me through. I have learned that if you don’t push yourself to get better than you are never going to be. Being in tune with your morals, your values, and the things that you believe in will bring you a far distance. With being stubborn, I have become a person that has been able to stay true to myself and I am so proud of that.

Sincerely,

Someone Stubborn

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
