It's 6 o'clock on a Saturday night and everyone seems to be having a date night/ family night out. These are the nights a host dreads. Nothing is more awful than working in a busy restaurant when you are the one getting paid hourly and not receiving tips. Here are 10 reasons hosts hate busy nights.
1. "You told us it would be 15 minutes 30 minutes ago."
We just want to say, "Oh honey, please shut up and sit yourself back down. I wrote down the exact time you put your name on the list. It has only been 12 minutes. Get a grip because I do not have time to worry about sitting you when their are three other families in front of you." Sadly, we cannot say this, unless we want to be jobless. We just have to smile politely and apologize for their wait. Then we have to rush seating so they are not angry when we seat them, because that isn't fair to the server.
2. "A table's OK." *Seats them at table.* "Um, can we not have a booth."
I seriously just asked you and you said a table was okay. Do not complain. Booths are able to sit a bigger family and you are eating alone. It is busy. It will not kill you to sit at a table for one meal. I'm pretty sure you do not have booths at home.
3. When a table gives you their order when seating them.
Okay, I'm just a hostess. Wait like two minutes so your server can do their job, since that's who you are tipping.
4. Doing that one servers job.
It never fails that their is that one server who is painfully slow. You are constantly having to grab things for his/her table, and they still get the tip.
5. Getting yelled at when the service was poor.
I'm not the boss, the manager, or your server. Therefore, do not yell at me because your server did not do their job. If there is an issue, ask to see a manager. Do not come yelling at me in a crowded room full of people waiting to be seated.
6. Having to apologize for the kitchen.
It is so embarrassing when you have lied to a number of families because the kitchen kept messing you orders and having to do recooks. Some customers do not understand that the kitchen getting backed up causes the wait to go up because they are not putting food out as fast as they should be. As a host, you get to enjoy getting yelled and cussed at even though none of it was your fault.
7. "You just double sat me."
Yes, yes I did. Sometimes we do not have a choice and we have to double sit a server. It is your job and if you cannot handle being double sat once then you do not need to be a server in a busy restaurant.
8. "Why are you skipping my section?"
We aren't. We are sitting each server in a specific order. Chill and just wait your turn.
9. Closing at nine and a party of 18 walks in a five minutes before you lock the door.
Is this seriously happening right now? You can clearly see that I am sweeping, putting the rugs up, and cleaning the bathrooms. That is so beyond rude to walk in when it's obvious we are closing.
10. Having to wear a headset.
It is really annoying when you're trying to talk to the customer and someone starts talking you in your headset. Then you sad there dumbfounded because you completely lost your train of thought. Customers just sit there and look at you like you're stupid. I promise i'm not talking to myself. There is an ear piece in my ear.
Customers need to realize that we are the host. We are not your server, the manager, or the boss. Take your complaints elsewhere.
