Why Being A Girl Kinda Sucks

Changes are inevitable.

Why Being A Girl Kinda Sucks

I am a girl and I hate hormones.

Yes, I said it...

Reading the first sentence, most girls probably already agree. Not only are we an emotional mess, but we are physically, too. Our hormones fluctuate like crazy and we have no motivation to put ourselves together. And guys, I'm not just talking about a menstrual cycle. Our hormones can cause so many other things than our one week of hell per month. Hormones will give us mood swings, depression, anxiety, cravings and many more. One moment we are crying and eating cake, the next we are laughing our butts off at something that probably wasn't even that funny. Ladies, it is normal.

These hormones not only make us miserable, but almost in a way, vulnerable to other emotions. During these hormonal changes we "oh so love," we also get physical complications. How lovely? Our skin and hair is prone to getting oily during any kind of hormonal change. As emotional as it is already, being oily does not fix anything. It is inevitable.

Though many people receive anxiety from hormonal changes, it only makes it worse. The more anxiety means more hormonal imbalance. It just does not seem quite fair being a girl. It is important to find a good effective way to treat your anxiety before it gets worse. Each person is different. One reducing technique could be effective for one person, but completely different for someone else.

While changes throughout the body are completely normal, there are many contraceptives that can increase hormones. That's right, I'm talking about birth control and a Plan B Pill, otherwise known as, the morning after pill. Starting a new contraceptive can be almost life changing. If not, it feels like it for the time being. Weight control can be difficult to maintain as is, but any extra hormone being injected into your body increases that difficulty.

Moodiness is another side effect. Stated above, we may be crying one moment, but happily moving on with our lives the next. And each day from month to month is always different. Expecting the same changes is the worst thing you can do. Being focused on your oily skin and buying the best soap for that could be one week, then the next you are dealing with acne and now you're looking for the best acne relief soap.

Hormonal changes are normal and every girl gets them. It doesn't matter if you are 16 or in your mid 40s, these changes are inevitable. Ladies, don't be ashamed of something you cannot change. Bad days and weeks happen to everyone.

Just remember, you are not alone in these changes. While going through these rough patches, try to pamper yourself and smile.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
