BLACK
Black, the definition is, "of the very darkest color owing to the absence of or complete absorption of light; the opposite of white." I guess you can say this is the definition of black, but some would add their own little twist on it. Maybe something like, "the act of not being accepted or" or "The underdog color of the rainbow", something like that. Being black in the world can sometimes feel as though we are a sin, the bottom of the totem pole, we're here but we aren't as appreciated as we should. I mean have you ever noticed how the word "black" is always used in a derogative term. Have you noticed how people want to "act black", but not "be black", but enough of that. This article is about why it is so important to be black in the world right now.
Our Culture...
As we know our culture has a huge impact on the world. We constantly see people wear our styles and either not give credit, or when it comes to real world issues, they don't stand with us. Our culture is a big part of the world, whether musically or even fashion wise. Iv'e seen tons of celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, have dreadlocks or have cornrows. Some blacks feel robbed, even dejected that before someone such as Kylie Jenner would have these things, we would be seen as trash to the public. So my message to all blacks is, appreciate our culture and never feel that you are subjected to not wear or do something cause the media says so. We as black people set trends everyday, which leads me into my next subject.
Social Media...
Sometimes I wonder if black people know who we are, I'm so serious when I say this. I don't think blacks know that we are kings and queens. Our black men have amazing gifts and skill, while our black women are just plain magic! We have the power to change the world in itself. if we would all come together hand and hand, and finally say enough is enough. I have seen black millennials go on social media and rant, but when it comes to actual real topics, not have a word to say. DON'T wait until the situation is happening and effecting your very life, take a stand now! Don't just tweet and let the hashtag of another death be another hashtag. Go out and protest, PEACEFULLY, go out in the community and make a difference, we the young are the future. The standard we set now, will set for a better future, use your social media aka your power for something impact sometimes.
Entertainment...
As far as entertainment we have so many shows on television and Netflix, that is beautiful for the black community. For example "Black-ish", an American comedy sitcom starring Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, tells a story about a upper middle class black family. The dad(Anthony Anderson) throughout the show tries to "create a sense of ethnic identity for the members of his family that will allow them to honor their background while preparing them to embrace the future." We also have Atlanta, a show made by Donald Glover, Luke Cage on Netflix and even Queen Sugar. Not to mention "Birth of a Nation" is hitting theaters, which tells the amazing and triumphal story of Nat Turner's rebellion. Embrace this time of black excellence and don't miss out on all this great stuff.
Enjoy the skin you are in! You are in it for a reason, realize the power you have, impact the world. And remember.... BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL.
