Although I was hesitant at first, becoming a server at a local restaurant was the smartest choice for me. I think of myself as a shy person. It takes a while for me to warm up to others and become talkative and actively engage, so I knew that when I was offered a waitressing position, I would have to step out of my comfort zone. Fast forward two years and I feel like I'm miles from where I used to be. I no longer feel shy walking up to my tables and greeting them, and when I joke with my tables it feels more natural to me and not so forced. As I've gotten more comfortable with people that I've never met while waitressing, I've gotten more comfortable outside of waitressing as well. I don't feel awkward holding a conversation with someone I've never met before, or as awkward at least. There are so many benefits to being a waitress and if you've never tried it, you might want to. Here are a few reasons why everyone should give serving a shot:
1. Like with me, it gets you out of your comfort zone.
I sometimes feel like the most awkward human being that has ever walked the planet, but through pushing myself out of my comfort zone I don't feel so uncomfortable and am not as nervous talking to people as I used to be.
2. I've developed amazing friendships.
I see some of these people four or five times a week and so I get comfortable around them. Going through the same crazy experiences really brings everyone together.
3. When I go out to eat, I'm a lot more sympathetic to the waitress.
Serving can be hard. If you have a lot of tables and are running around like crazy, it feels like you need another set of hands, so I understand when my waitress is stressed or a newbie. I've been there.
4. I've become a better person.
You meet a lot of different people as a server. Not everyone is as fortunate as the next person, so you become more sympathetic to the people who are going through a rough time.
Waitressing is an amazing job. It's quick money and you get paid every day, but you benefit so much more than the cash flow. I've hated my job some days but I know that I am where I'm supposed to be right now. I'm so glad that I've become a waitress.
