If you haven't seen "Finding Dory" in theaters yet, I highly recommend you do and read this again later because spoilers! For a nostalgic and hilarious ocean adventure, Finding Dory lives up to its predecessor "Finding Nemo" which was released in 2003 (13 years ago? Crazy!). Between the Sigourney Weaver references and commentary on marine captivity, nothing shocked me more than the introduction of Becky. This creepy bird creature was such a random addition to this seemingly innocent children's movie that I could not ignore her existence. Although Becky only got minimal screen time, I knew that a large cult following was going to amass for her the moment her red beady eyes locked with Marlin, and I am proud to say that I am a part of it. I left the theater thinking about Becky. My first thought was, what the HELL is Becky? Turns out she is a Common Loon and they look just as terrifying in real life...
If I saw that thing in person, I would throw an entire loaf of bread at it just so it wouldn't drag me to hell later. Becky's appearance in "Finding Dory" makes sense considering Common Loons typically migrate to the California coast in the winter. The birds are rumored to be called loons for their clumsiness when on land (honestly, same). Disregarding Becky's nightmarish appearance, I found her to be one of the most empowering female characters in Pixar history. She is the true hero of the story.
For one,
1. She is an independent lady bird. Becky bursts on the screen after the call from her home boys, Fluke and Rudder, a pair of cockney accent having sea lions who somehow know her unforeseen capabilities, regardless of her tousled appearance. She follows her flock but definitely marches to the beat of her own drum... or squawk.
2. Becky knows what she is doing even though everyone (except Nemo) doubts her. I trust Becky.
3. She carries a heavy ass bucket filled with water like its NOTHING with her man in it and his son. Shout out to Gerald, the original bucket wielder.
4. Becky is basically an Uber for fish.
5. Becky will eat whenever she wants and however much she wants. Popcorn is her guilty pleasure.
6. Her Disney Wiki is hilarious. Although I think her personality holds much more than just stupid and clumsy! She is an expert navigator and loyal companion.7. She cares about what's on the inside. Marlin is literally a species she would typically eat but since he took the time to really look at her, she gave him a chance. Although the feeling for Marlin isn't necessarily mutual, Becky will be a lifetime companion. Common Loons typically mate for life (s'cute!), so Marlin and her are going to be together forever. Ooorooo Ooooroooo!
I think a lot of us can relate to Becky, especially those of us who are cute in a unique way but under-appreciated. If you are interested in becoming more like Becky, I was lucky enough to come across this wonderful outfit that I will wear everyday for the rest of my life and you should too.
