Has Acting Rude Become The Norm?

Why be kind?

Has Acting Rude Become The Norm?

People can be so incredible at times; a lovely smile, a kind word, a compassionate action. The bottom line is, if one payed attention to what is around them, they would find many reasons to smile, if only for a moment. On the other hand, paying the same amount of attention, one will most definitely find the answer to the question of "Why do humans wage war against one another."

Lets face it, at times we can all be terrible people to the ones we love. My guess is that it is because we get too comfortable around them. We take things or people for granted which ultimately is our downfall. Yet, I accept that as a natural occurrence; what I cannot accept however, is the lack of morality prevalent within our society, from one stranger to another. That is where we are at the greatest fault because there are over seven billion people on this Earth, 99% of which, will always be a stranger to an individual. If we struggle to treat the ones we love well, then what will stop us from treating strangers any worse?

In a single day, I have witnessed many deplorable actions that human beings have ensued upon each other. I witnessed a student rudely ignore a pier who was trying to help them. I witnessed a woman in a grocery store hold up a line of people so her friend can cut ahead of the line. Then I watched that same woman accidentally drop a bottle of soda on the floor, which then exploded up and onto each person on the line she had just cut. After this happened she just stood there with her nose up and refused to acknowledge that it happened-no apology. When that happened, the worker ringing in this woman's items ignored the incident. Since she ignored what had happened, the other worker who was three isles over, stopped what she was doing to clean it up.

I can't understand the reasoning of these people, i truly can't. Maybe I expect too much from strangers. Maybe that is why the media covers stories which depict a brave bystander stepping up to help a stranger in need. Maybe they cover that kind of story because it is so rare in our society. Since when did doing the right thing become such a rare phenomena?

We will never find peace if we cannot learn to love our fellow man. If you take anything from this article, please, take that and be kind.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
