Who designed these college lecture hall seats? I am convinced whoever decided the set up did not consider the book bags, the curvy people, the arm space, the uncomfortable way we have to take a test, or how many butts pass by my face as someone trips over my shoe trying to sit down.
Every day as I go to my lecture hall I aim to get an end seat because I hate squeezing through those thin aisles with all my crap and butt facing my fellow peers as I say excuse me 100 times. Seriously, it is the most annoying thing about lecture halls. Especially if you are already seated and the girl who is already late to class every day decides to sit in the middle of your row asks if that seat is taken.
Seriously? You expect all of us to do an awkward side turn for you to squeeze by? Whose idea was this? We need two more inches between the aisle. The aisles are so small I am afraid to bring out my laptop simply because people are always squeezing and bumping things onto the floor.
And what about my curvy sisters? We already feel hippy enough and these little aisles make our struggle even worst. This is why lecture hall attendance is severely less than those in smaller classrooms. No student wants to be uncomfortable while learning.
The small amount of room makes test taking annoying. I place my test in my lap while my scantron takes up my three- inch desk flap. What kind of foolishness is this? Like really, process the idea that we have to now take the exam in our lap.
If you think it is hard for hippy people imagine my left-handed friends. All of our selfish right-handed friends occupy the few left-hand desks available in the classroom. Even if there were more room between the aisles, each chair could have a left-hand and right-hand option desk to accommodate all students or right-hand people could be considerate. Think before you sit righties.
As we enter the complete digital age it amazes me that classrooms have yet to accommodate for laptops in a more efficient way. Outlets in classrooms are typically found in the front, in the back, on a random row, or on the ceiling.
Each seat should have a USB port for cell phones and a miniature outlet located under the seat for laptop chargers. This will open the doors for technological advances in the classrooms and even open the doors for more participation if professors incorporated the use of technology.
Lecture halls are usually the longest and biggest classes in a university or college. Usually, they have low attendance rate and this is because of how compacted students feel while learning. Widen the aisle and add new things to accommodate all students for an overall better learning environment. I am tired of having to decide to turn my butt towards my peers when squeezing through a row to sit down.
