Have you ever wonder why some foods are called what they are? For example, why is a hamburger called a hamburger if it isn't made with ham? I am here to give the best answers I can give you.
1. Let's discuss the naming behind hamburger. Apparently, the belief behind why the hamburger is called hamburger is that we, and by we I mean Americans, borrowed the name from a German dish called "Hamburg Style Beef", it was named after the city in Germany; Hamburg. The dish was actually eaten raw. I have no idea how anyone could eat meat raw, it would definitely mess up my stomach.
2. Why is a pineapple called a pineapple? At first, it was a way to describe the reproductive organ of conifer trees, which are now called pine cones. When the Europeans first discovered the tropical fruit, they thought it reminded them of the pine cones, so they decided to call it a pineapple. I find it interesting considering it isn't even grown on a tree.
3. Why is a hot dog called a hot dog? When the German immigrants came to America not only did they bring their German sausage, they also brought their dachshund dogs. They believe it started out as a little joke then turned into a life long thing. I would hate to be a dachshund on Halloween. Am I right?
4. Why are strawberries called strawberries? People actually don't know the history behind the strawberries but there are three theories on why they are called strawberries. One theory believes that they are called strawberries because woodlanders would string them with straws to carry the berries to the market. Another theory believes that it looks like straws are embedded inside the berries.
5. Lastly, why is guacamole called guacamole when it is made out of avocado. The Spanish version of guacamole is ahuacamolli which mean "avocado sauce". Who would've thunk?
Now you can stop wondering why these 5 foods are named what they are named and hopefully this will stop haunting your brain when you try to sleep. I know I will be able to sleep. Well here I am signing out, until next week my friends!
