After the Super Bowl commercials and the release of the "Deadpool" movie, many people are noticing and wondering why are comic book movies no longer being marketed towards kids. Where have the days gone of family friendly superheros?
Well, to quote Deadpool:
Not only are most of the characters R to X-rated in general, but the most recent comics have been darker in tone to match their target audience, this group of people being adults who grew up on the old "Batman" movies.
Back in the days of "Batman," the target audience were kids and those kids have grown up to support the last decade or so of comic book movies. It just makes sense to marketers to age up the themes and characters with the target audience.
Many parents have been upset at "Deadpool" being R-rated, so upset, in fact, that they started a petition to make a PG-13 rated "Deadpool" movie. Most of the arguments are that their children would love to see "Deadpool," but can't because of the rating.
What they do not understand is that Deadpool is not a PG-13 character, even if Disney tried to make him so. After watching the movie myself on Saturday, I can say that if they took out all the “strong violence and language throughout, sexual content and graphic nudity," we would have a movie that is about 15-20 minutes long.
But what about "Suicide Squad?" The character that has sparked the most controversy, Harley Quinn, was first introduced in a children's tv show, so why is she so sexualized in the movie's trailer?
Harley is sexualized heavily in the "Suicide Squad" trailer. Ever since her first incarnation, she has been a "sex icon" and dressed so accordingly.
"But why must she be sexy? She's a doctor!"
Well that is quite a good point, but sex sells. The producers and marketers understand that. Harley Quinn is perhaps the most recognizable member of the "Suicide Squad." It only makes sense to make her sexy to get more butts in the seats during opening weekend.
So, from a R-rated background and money investment standpoint, it makes no sense to market either "Suicide Squad" or "Deadpool" to children. It looks like we're gonna be stuck here a while.
