Why I Appreciate Twenty One Pilots

When getting to know people one question that might come up is "What type of music do you listen to?" and some people confidently state one or two genres of music they enjoy, but many others (including myself) might be less than specific claiming to like a variety of different musical sounds. So I find it comforting that an artist like Twenty One Pilots actually makes music of different genres. I find it connecting that I can relate to not only others whom simply listen to a multitude of music, but also a musical group who isn’t afraid to try different styles.

Their music isn’t just for those of us whom are open to almost all music, but also for those whom prefer a specific genre. They allow for greater connections with everyone in your life, or anyone you might meet in the future. My one friend might find music with screaming to be scary, but there is quite a few upbeat songs they might actually relate to and enjoy. Another friend might find the pop beat utterly annoying, and might prefer a more hip/hop vibe and there would still be songs for them. Their wide range of music makes their songs so easy to share with others, especially when sharing music is a way we as humans express our feelings for one another.

But ultimately the love for them derives from one place. Almost anyone who listens to Twenty One Pilots can state their appreciation for them originates from the meaning behind their lyrics. Each song, each line, each word is carefully plotted with some meaning behind it. Sometimes it is simply fun to listen to a song without meaning, but sometimes you truly need something that has depth.

They are realistic, relatable, and all-in-all human. They don’t just romanticize love, but understand the pain that comes with it. It isn’t just about a bad day, but about the way we have to fake some sense of happiness to society. I mean in “Not Today,” a line explains the happy upbeat pop sound with, “Listen, I know this one’s a contradiction because of how happy it sounds, But the lyrics are so down, It’s OK though, because it represents, wait better yet, it is, Who I feel I am right now.” They show different aspects of life including the good, the bad, the dark and twisty, and the bright and shiny. Even if you don’t listen to them, I can guarantee there is at least one song, if not more, that you would relate to on a deeper level.

They show the complexity of people. We are not just one genre or another, we are not just happy or sad, we are not just good or bad, and we are simply just not one thing. We are intricate creatures and their music allows you to feel the complexity life encompasses.

For those who are Twenty One Pilot fans, I am glad that we share this bond over music and I think you have amazing taste. For those of you who have yet to listen to Twenty One Pilots I suggest giving them a try because they have something for everyone.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
