Why Apple Cozies? Why DIY?

I just don't understand why DIY.

OK, I have tried to jump on board with a trend that’s been going on for a few years. But no matter how hard I try, I can not seem to understand it.

DIY-ing.

I know, if it’s not hurting anyone, and they enjoy, why should I care?

But I do. And for the life of me I can’t explain why.

But what I also don’t understand is why DIY, when you could buy the exact same item, for cheaper, and for less time? Why would I spend a hundred dollars to make my own wreath, when I can buy one for 40?

I can understand the sentimental value sometimes, but seriously, some of the DIY stuff is just weird. Like silicone wallets made from hot glue. And toilet paper roll flower art. And boxers-turned-into-crop-tops.

If someone has kids and wants to get artsy, I could get that. Some of those DIY projects are great for kids! And it makes great memories. And with the holidays coming around again, it’s a great time to bust out the clay ornament makers and the pipe cleaner candy canes.

But I just can’t get on board with the less useful, more expense DIY’s that bloggers do. Like turning old jeans into earrings. And apple cozies. And buying tons of expensive equipment just to make their own charger, when they could have gotten one for 10 dollars at their local Walgreens.

Don’t get me wrong, I love holiday arts and crafts. I’m doing some this year with my family and I can’t wait to do them, because they’re creative, fun and non-expensive. I love repurposing old stuff. Sometimes. When it can be done cheaply, and for a real purpose. Not for apple cozies and a flimsy remote holder made of cardboard.

But I guess as long as they’re enjoying themselves, and not hurting anyone, more power to them. I just don’t understand it.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
