Why I Am A Vegetarian

Animals are friends, not food.

Let me get this straight, I'm a vegetarian and I'm doing just fine! Yes, I eat enough protein, thank you for your unwarranted concern. Newsflash, there is protein in many foods other than meat. For example, beans are great, and also tofu is delicious. I promise you, I'm okay. I wouldn't be vegetarian if I didn't want to be right? No cares about your protein intake until they find out you're a vegan or vegetarian.

So, what does it mean to be vegetarian? While the simple explanation is we don't eat any meat. Anything with a face is off limits for us. "So, you still eat fish and seafood right?" It's almost ridiculous how much I've been asked this question. When did fish stop being an animal? Please inform me because I would like to know. Fish is still an animal, so I don't eat fish. Quite simple!

"So, does that mean that you can't drink milk or eat eggs?" This is another common misconception about being vegetarian. Vegans are the ones who don't consume any meat or animal by-products, which includes milk, cheese, and eggs. Being vegetarian, half of my diet is cheese. I love my cheese and that is no joke. I would happily accept a heart-shaped box of different cheeses for Valentine's Day.

"So, what do you eat? Grass and lettuce?" Wow, yes, I love a plate full of grass and lettuce. I eat that as my meal three times a day! Sometimes, I throw in spinach if I want to shake it up a little bit! But, seriously, I can still eat cheese pizza, sushi, ice cream, the list goes on! Also, there are meat alternatives that seem to get more and more delicious every day. We have black bean burgers, tofu hot dogs, and many more galore. I'm not missing out in the slightest, and that's something most people don't seem to realize.

"What about lasagna/cheeseburgers/steak/etc.? I couldn't live without it!" Well, I've been a vegetarian for 2+ years and I'm still alive. Seems like I'm doing fine? Fun fact, I used to be the biggest meat eater ever, filet mignon was my jam. I only liked my steak medium rare. However, I saw a video that changed the way I looked at the entire food industry. It was called Food Inc. and I could never look at meat the same way again. Somehow seeing how it all works made me realize that I couldn't eat meat anymore.

My main reason for becoming a vegetarian was that I love animals. If I can't kill the animal myself, how can I eat it? Why should I let someone else do the dirty work and just ignore what goes on behind closed doors? Why should I take an animal's life just because I want to eat steak? Animals are so much more than a cheeseburger. Animals have feelings, thoughts, and emotions just like us. Just because I don't eat meat, does not mean I judge those who do. You do you, and I'll do me. Just let me eat in peace, okay?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
