It should come as no surprise that I will not be voting for Donald Trump during this election, or ever. There is no doubt in my mind that if we elected Trump as president, what we have already worked for would be destroyed. Sure, you could sit and argue with me for hours about why you may believe what I’m about to say is wrong, but you are entitled to your own opinion and I respect that; however, I want to make sure you all know what you are getting yourself into.
On Monday, October 17th, I got the opportunity to watch as former president Bill Clinton spoke to the community at Keene State College about why he believes Hillary is fit for the presidency. As Clinton took a pause in speaking, protesters yelled out “Make America Great Again!”, which as we all know by now is the slogan for the republican candidate, Donald Trump. What made the speech so great were the remarks said by Bill Clinton in regards to electing Trump as president:
“I’d like to be twenty again. I would like that. But I would not vote for anyone who promised to make me twenty again. And I don’t want the social order we had fifty years ago. I don’t want an America that’s less fair to African Americans, that’s less fair to Latino Americans, that’s less fair to first generation immigrants, that makes the LGBT community hide in a closet somewhere, and gives women a chance in the workforce. I don’t want that kind of America. I don’t want an America where children with disabilities are not able to go to school because nobody can see their abilities. I don’t want that kind of America. And I just came here to say that I really think that we are the best-positioned country in the world for the twenty-first century, and we need to be more upbeat about this, not deny our problems, but don’t deny our promises."
Just in that statement, Clinton gives multiple reasons why not to vote for Trump.
As a woman, many people expect me to want to vote for Hillary Clinton based off of the fact that one of her main platforms is women’s equality. Sure, that is definitely a bonus fact, as everyone should be treated equally unless given a reason not to be. I was surprisingly one of the few college students that was not voting in Bernie Sanders’ favor, despite multiple people trying to persuade me into changing my own views and opinions. The main reason for choosing to vote for Hillary is that I am completely against Trump’s ideas. We are in a year where voting in the election matters and I am not willing to leave it up to other people to choose our future president. I want to take matters into my own hands and make people aware of the dangers of electing Trump for president. This is not to tell people not to vote for Trump, but to further inform them of the decisions that could change their entire lives. I won’t go into more of the political details on why I have decided not to vote for Trump. This is not to say that Donald Trump is a bad person, just that I don’t believe he is a good person to become our next president, and I am entitled to my own opinions. If you are over the age of 18, please inform yourself on the stand points and overall benefits of both candidates and vote for the next president on election day.
