Why I am Glad I Left My Public University

Why going from big school to small school was the best decision I ever made.

Why I am Glad I Left My Public University
Charles Williams

When I graduated from high school, I had looked into several different colleges, most of them public universities. I obviously wanted to save money, so I chose to go to the university that was within driving distance and that I had been around most of my life. After two years there, I have to say I am really glad that I decided to leave there and transfer to a private Christian university. Here is five reasons I am glad that I moved here.

  • First of all, I’m glad that I moved here because of the fact that I am getting the chance to learn how to be me and who I am as a person. When living under your parent’s roof, you don’t always get to figure out who you are. You are who your parents let you be. And that is not always you. By moving out, I have discovered who I really am. And I really like me.
  • Second reason is because the teachers care about me. At my old university, when I was sick, I was told I had to suffer through class and never got to go home. However, here if I’m sick I can just message my teachers, they pray for me and they wish me luck on getting to feeling better. I also can get help with my classes easier!
  • You get to know literally everybody! I knew a lot of people at my last university because of my job at the post office on campus, but here? There isn’t a time that I’m walking across campus and I don’t run into someone I know. I love it, because here I can develop deep friendships that I couldn’t develop at my old school.
  • I can actually become a part of my community. Where I am now, my entire community comes together and everybody is a part of everything on campus. I can simply walk through Walmart and run into people in the community that I know and have things in common with.
  • I have a sense of family when I am in a small town university. Everybody genuinely cares about everyone else and will give them the shirt off their back to help them. Everyone helps each other, whether it be I need quarters for a laundry machine or pulling you out of a ditch (not that I have ever needed either thankfully). Everybody helps everybody.

I am so happy that I left my old university for this one. I have discovered myself, my calling in life, and my future wife. I am so glad that everything has happened the way that it was supposed to this past year. Now, as I am entering my second year here, I have even more friends, know even more people, and am enjoying life to the fullest.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
