All Students Should Be Required To Take Personal Finance

Since my freshman year of high school ( I just finished my freshman year of college as an accounting major), I have taken 12 business classes. To me and probably to many, the one I found the most practical was personal finance.

In this class, I learned many useful skills that I will use the rest of my life. I learned how to fill out a tax return. I learned how to write checks and keep track of what I write out. I learned how to balance a checkbook. I learned how investment funds work including interest. I learned how to invest and research 401K and retirement options such as mutual funds. I learned how to budget for the present and for the future.

And in case you dont believe why we need just based off what I said, I asked some others on why they found personal finance class to be beneficial.

I would say that it taught me the basic business skills that all people will need to acquire before they step out into the real world like managing a budget, learning how to pay bills, learn how to do taxes, and other generally useful things that you would have to go through trial and error with if you don't take this class- Katie ( High School Class of 2016)

For me personal finance was really helpful when I got my first job, because I knew how to fill out tax paperwork. Also, I was much better off in the college financial aid process because I could understand more of the forms -Erin (High School Class of 2017)

I think all students should be required to take some kind of personal financial class because it'll help prevent young people from making huge mistakes with their money once they get into the real world. Kids need to learn how to save and how to spend wisely.- Megan (High School Class of 2017)

You learn skills that you need in life after high school that become very valuable. It was extremely helpful in opening my eyes to the responsibilities you have as an adult. If I didn't take this class I wouldn't know how to sign my paychecks or budget my money so I don't spend it all on food. But in all seriousness, I know I will use what I learned in this class throughout my whole life and that's why I think everyone should take it. I know I'll forget what year the American Revolution started because I won't need to use that as much as I will the skills I learned in this class. -Gracie (High School Class of 2016)

It teaches you valuable skills that you really need throughout your adult life. If I didn't take personal finance there are a lot of things(such as writing checks, making budgets, insurance, etc.) that I would be clueless about! I learned how to handle professional situations and how much responsibility you really have to take on as an adult. I'm super thankful I took this class and I think it should definitely be required because of its countless benefits. The set of skills you learn throughout this class you can carry with you for the rest of your life.-Bre (High School Class of 2016)

I think that it's a great class to take because it teaches you all about how to invest your money wisely which is something that you will need to know eventually. It is one of the few classes that I think will be useful to me in the future. -Tia (High School Class of 2017)

So there you have it, and it would stop all those who complain that high school never taught them anything useful.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
