Throughout the decades, makeup has always been a big deal; we can’t deny that.
Today, it’s a huge craze. The amount of makeup tutorial videos I come across on a daily basis is staggering. There’s contouring, highlighting, different types of lipsticks, different kinds of eyeliners… The list goes on and on.
I, personally, was never that into makeup. Sure, I love a good lipstick and eye shadow, but I never really saw the point in spending hundreds of dollars on makeup products when there’s perfectly good drug store makeup to be bought. Not to knock anyone who is in love with makeup, but it was just never my thing.
For celebrities today, makeup is more important than ever. During award shows we see all kinds of different looks and makeup styles. Celebrities are coming up with their own makeup lines left and right. If a celebrity is spotted out and about without a full face of makeup, it makes headlines!
With all that pressure weighing in... Alicia Keys is defying expectations. She recently came out with an article explaining her reasoning for ditching the makeup. She explains how the constant expectations of having a full face of makeup everywhere she went was getting too much for her. She said how she would be scared to leave her home without makeup due to the encroaching fear that someone was just waiting to take a picture. She began to feel like her natural, makeup-less face wasn't good enough for the world to see.
She explained how she was sick of the constant messages women received; that we always need to look perfect, sexy, and desirable. She decided to go makeup-free and she has never felt more empowered and beautiful.
This is so important because Alicia Keys is a powerful, talented and influential woman who many people look up to. She doesn’t just occasionally post a “no makeup selfie," but she performs and goes to award shows with a natural face! Epic!
I think this is so important because not every girl is into makeup. It gets really intimidating seeing all these people doing insane things with makeup when I can hardly do my eyeliner. I’ve come to realize that I like having a more natural look, anyway.
I don’t think it’s a makeup vs. no makeup thing, it’s more of what makes someone feel beautiful and what doesn’t.
If doing a full face of makeup every day makes you feel beautiful, then go for it. If wearing no makeup every day makes you feel beautiful, then that’s awesome too.
It’s a choice.
We shouldn’t all be expected to be experts at makeup. We should all do what makes us comfortable when it comes to how we present ourselves, even huge celebrities like Alicia Keys.
