Why Adopting A Dog Matters

Let’s face it, dogs are truly man and woman’s best friend for many of us in our lives. Whether we own a dog or plan to own one, thanks to our great experiences with them, dogs have a way of touching our hearts in ways that other animals cannot. Of course, raising a dog is a huge responsibility that begins not only from the very first meeting, but from the decision to make them part of our family. Probably the biggest and earliest decision is whether to buy one from a kennel or adopt one from an animal shelter. For many, adopting a dog is the best method for both the dog and the owner and here are a few reasons why.

Rescuing another life-

Truth is, when you adopt a dog, you’re basically rescuing another living being. Many animals are placed at a shelter due to being lost, found after escaping abuse owners, or simply left somewhere because their previous owner couldn't afford caring for them. Adopting a dog gives broken people the chance to connect with another broken creature and help rebuild others' lives through an amazing friendship.

Pre-ownership bonding-

When you visit a shelter, you’ll have the opportunity to meet many dogs and before making a decision, you’ll be able to visit them frequently. Some people know when a dog is the right match for them, but for others, it’s not an easy decision right of the bat. Visiting your possible companion and spending time with them will give you enough to know if they’re the right match for you.

You can’t put a price on a life-

Paying for adoption fees doesn’t discount the fact that you’re helping to save a life. Simply buying a dog or any other animal puts a price tag on their lives and it’s a dark method that needs to be pushed away in favor of something more humane. Many dogs become placed in shelters because people who buy them think of them only as home accessories. Instead of buying a dog, adopt a dog who needs not only a home, but a best friend to spend their life with.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
