Looking back at the past 365 days can be boring, annoying and tiring. But for this year in sports, looking back makes it all worth it. Let’s take a look at 2016’s biggest moments in sports:
Peyton Manning and Three NBA Legends Go Out on Top
Manning, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan have cemented their place in history for their respective sports. In Manning's last season, he guided the Denver Broncos to a 12-4 record in the regular season, culminating in a 24-10 Super Bowl 50 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
“I thought about it a lot, prayed about it a lot,” Manning said in his final press conference. “It was just the right time.”
During his 18-year career with the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos, he became the all-time leader in touchdowns (539), passing yards (71,940) and wins (200) in the NFL. Canton will be waiting for him.
On the hardwood, Bryant ended his NBA career by dropping 60 points in his final game. He retires with five NBA titles, one MVP award and 18 all-star appearances. “The Black Mamba” is also third all-time in points scored (33,646) in his 20-year career, all with the LA Lakers.
Duncan ranks sixth all-time in rebounds (15,091) and is widely regarded as the greatest power forward the game has seen. His retirement stunned the league due to its quiet manner, but his accomplishments will never be ignored. “The Big Fundamental” won five NBA titles, two MVP awards and made 15 all-star appearances in his 19-year career, all with the San Antonio Spurs.
Another player who called it a career was Kevin Garnett. “The Big Ticket” jumped from high school to the NBA and played 21 seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets. He won one NBA championship, one MVP award and his presence will be missed throughout the sport. The Hall of Fame now awaits all four gentlemen.
Cavaliers and Cubs End Title Droughts
One man set out on a mission to return to his hometown and win a championship— his name is LeBron James. With the help of Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love and others, they earned a 57-25 record in the regular season.
In the playoffs, Cleveland steamrolled through Detroit, Atlanta and Toronto before facing the 73-9 Golden State Warriors. In a hard-fought seven-game series, James became the talisman for the Cavaliers as they overcame a 3-1 series deficit. Game seven ended with a score of 93-89, with Cleveland winning their first NBA title and James accomplishing what he set out to do in his career. “Cleveland, this is for you,” James rejoiced with tears in his eyes after game seven.
As for the sport of baseball, the Cubs were seen as a team that would never win the big one. Then team president Theo Epstein came in 2011, followed by manager Joe Maddon in 2015. Expectations were enormous for the Cubbies to win a World Series as soon as possible. In 2016, the Cubs had the league’s best record heading into the playoffs at 103-59. Players such as Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and others were ready to make Chicago celebrate.
They defeated the San Francisco Giants in five games in the NLDS and the L.A. Dodgers in six in the NLCS. All that stood in front of glory were the Cleveland Indians, led by 2016 AL Manager of the Year, Terry Francona. It took seven games, overcoming a 3-1 Cleveland series lead to defeat them in a classic game seven, 9-8 in 10 innings.
The curse was over, the 108-year wait for a championship was over. Chicago rejoiced as they can now call themselves champions of the baseball world.
An Irishman Took Part, Then Took Over the UFC
Ever since his debut knockout victory over the forgotten Marcus Brimage back in 2013, Conor McGregor has achieved historic success up until this point. 10 fights in the UFC— nine victories, one defeat, two championship victories— he avenged that loss this past August. One of those title wins came against Jose Aldo, the UFC Featherweight Champion at the time— a 13-second knockout.
McGregor had three scraps in 2016, the first against Nick Diaz back in March where he got choked out. Then came the aforementioned vengeance in a rematch with Diaz five months later that still has people calling it the "Fight of the Year." And now, his latest title victory, a second round TKO victory over now former UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez, has cemented McGregor’s place among the all-time greats.
He’s only the third fighter in UFC history to win title belts in two different weight classes, joining Hall of Famers Randy Couture and BJ Penn. And if that’s not impressive, with the victory over Alvarez, McGregor became the first fighter in the 23-year history of the organization to hold two belts simultaneously.
“It feels familiar,” McGregor said in his post-fight press conference. “I saw it so clearly so consistently. Until it’s here in reality.” Life is good for the man they call “Notorious,” the fighting pride or Dublin, Ireland.
