As we prepare for the upcoming year for films, I figured I would make a list of the top five directors to watch in the next five years. The directors I discuss below have been consistent with their work by coming out with a film each year and also making films that have been great. Before I state these directors, let me just say that these are not the only five directors that are doing a lot of great things in film. We are still being blown away by the works of Tim Burton and Wes Anderson, and plus we still have a lot of great films to look forward to. From the works of Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Clint Eastwood. And come on! Who isn't wondering what Quentin Tarantino has in store for what could be his last two films that he ever makes. What I am listing here are five great filmmakers who are, as of right now, making a lot of movies and are expected to be making movies for the next five or ten years. Many of them have already had a tremendous amount of success and we are just waiting for their next big film. Others are still hungry, and we are excited to see what they have in store. So, without further ado, here are five directors to keep an eye on for the next five years.
5. Antoine Fuqua
Antoine Fuqua is an African American filmmaker from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He started his career directing music video's, most notably Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise." By 1998, he directed his first feature film "The Replacement Killers," but it wasn't until 2001, when he wowed us with his film "Training Day" starring Denzel Washington. Denzel would go on to win an Oscar for this film, and since then, Fuqua and him have collaborated on three films. But Antoine wasn't done there. He has made many great thrillers such as "The Shooter," "Brooklyn's Finest," and "Olympus has Fallen." Last summer, he came out with a boxing drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal called "Southpaw" which many critics and audiences enjoyed all over. Now he is coming out with a remake of a classic film called "The Magnificent Seven" which many people can't wait to see. Right now, Fuqua's films are in high demand. It will only be a matter of time to see what he has to offer next.
Last 3 films:
"Southpaw" (2015)
"The Equalizer" (2014)
"Olympus has Fallen" (2013)
Next film to see:
"The Magnificent Seven" (2016)
4. J.J Abrams
JJ Abrams is another filmmaker that is in high demand right now. I will mostly be talking about his directing, but he is also known to be a great scriptwriter and Producer. Recently, Abrams has brought back Sci- Fi and has directed episodes from many TV Series such as "Lost," "The Office," and "Alias." Besides TV, he has brought back such space epics as "Star Wars" and "Star Trek,," which many people have raved about and the first film he directed was "Mission Impossible 3" starring Tom Cruise. Recently, we haven't heard anything of his next big directing project, but we do know that he has been doing a lot as a filmmaker with the credits he has to producing. Sooner or later, Abrams will be coming out with some films that audiences will grow to love.
Last 3 Films:
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015)
"Star Trek Into Darkness" (2013)
"Super 8" (2011)
3. David O. Russell
In my opinion, this guy just doesn't get enough credit. He has made some fantastic films over the last couple of years and I can assure you that he will make even more great films in the future. This guy does it all. He directs, produces, and he writes most of the scripts to the films he directs. He has worked with the likes of Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Robert De Niro, and Jennifer Lawrence who has been in his last three films and she has been nominated for her performances. His debut was in 1994 with "Spanking the Monkey," but over time, Russell made other phenomenal films like "Three Kings," "I Heart Huckabee's," and "The Fighter." Also, I would include the last three films I will list off which two of the three were nominated for Best Picture. Trust me on this, Russell is making a name for himself in the film industry. Whatever his next film is, it has the potential to be great.
Last 3 Films:
"Joy" (2015)
"American Hustle" (2013)
"Silver Linings Playbook" (2012)
Also Directed:
"Accidental Love" (Credited as Stephen Greene)(2015)
2. Alejandro G. Inarritu
He's an inspiration to his native country in Mexico and is making a name for all Latin American filmmakers. His films have been great over the years and right now he is one of the biggest names in the film industry. Recently he has been known to bring a comeback to the career of Michael Keaton and was the director that got Leonardo DiCaprio his first Oscar. His first nomination for directing came with the film "Babel" in 2006 starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. Ever since then, he has made many great films and has won the Best Director award for two straight years. Will he go three years in a row? Who knows. He doesn't have anything we know of coming out this next year, but we definitely should keep an eye on him. You may think he should be number one on our list, but this next director is just mind blowing.
Last 3 Films:
"The Revenant" (2015)
"Birdman" (2014)
"Biutiful" (2010)
1. Christopher Nolan
Christopher Nolan could be one of the greatest directors of our generation. He has done some crazy things in film the past couple of years. I'm sure by the time he's done, he will be regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. He surprised us with films like "Memento," "Inception," and "The Prestige." We were all also very amazed with what he did with "The Dark Knight Trilogy" which took superhero films to a whole new level. And his space epic "Interstellar" even made us more amazed at what this director is capable of. What I love most about Nolan is that he also writes the scripts to his films with his brother Jonathan Nolan and is a producer on most of his work. Nolan is a great filmmaker and we are all very excited for his upcoming World War 2 Drama. If there is any director that I would watch these next five years, Christopher Nolan should be the first on your list no matter what.
Last 3 Films:
"Interstellar" (2014)
"The Dark Knight Rises" (2012)
"Inception" (2010)
Next Film to see:
"Dunkirk" (2017)
