Today’s television shows display characters that portray a variety of personality types, lifestyles and emotions to capture a vast amount of possible story lines. It ranges from scandalous events in "Gossip Girl" to the intensity and complexity of "Lost" and even the sweet and hilarious moments in "How I Met Your Mother"; between these three shows lies an assortment of personalities and plots.
I am an intense Netflix-binger, as many are these days. I get hooked on shows fast and will watch the entirety of seasons within a few months. While most people can impressively get through shows faster than I do, but even between school and extracurricular activities, I am proud to say I manage to additionally stay on top of my Netflix series. When I watch a show I completely put myself within the story line. I discover the characters I love or can’t stand, then I tend to get emotionally involved with everything. Without even realizing, I always pick a favorite character that has qualities I wish I had, or even who I can relate to. No matter how much I feel I can connect with Monica Geller’s Obsessive Compulsive and perfectionist side in "Friends," or even Rory Gilmore’s sweet, “brainiac” and determined qualities from "Gilmore Girls," "New Girl" 's Jessica Day will always have my heart.
For anyone who is not living their life to the fullest and has not seen the show "New Girl" before, I will provide some background. "New Girl" follows Jess Day (played by Zooey Deschanel) who, post break-up, moves into an apartment with four guys, Nick, Schmidt, Coach and later Winston, who posted a roommate ad on Craigslist. The show portrays them becoming friends with one another, their own personal lives and the ups and downs that they go through together. Each episode is absolutely hilarious and has me laughing out loud even if I am watching it by myself in my room or with headphones in public (I provide this description to highlight my lack of shame regarding how awkward or weird this may seem from an outside perspective).
I believe Jess is a figure in our generation who many viewers could look up to and admire. With her bubbly charm, quirky personality, sporadic break-out-in-song-about-how-she-feels-moments, optimism and awkward scenarios, Jess is as real as it gets. When watching her on the screen, I believe people can relate to the way that she handles real life scenarios in her awkward yet adorable manner.
Jess does not have it all together, yet she pushes through life viewing it with the glass half full. Whether helping out one of her students or expressing her views on women’s’ rights, Jess always stands up for what she believes in. She does not take her teaching job lightly and uses her creative abilities to connect with her students on a unique level. When it comes to men, she is as honest as she can be with them. She has a good understanding of the difference between a healthy and an unhealthy relationship, and she does not allow anyone to change who she is as a person. Jess puts all of her love into her relationships, whether intimate or platonic, and will sacrifice absolutely anything for the people she cares about.
Within each episode Jess demonstrates her ability to speak her mind, whether stating how pink wine makes her slutty, admitting that she doesn’t know what she is doing emotionally and sexually or sharing that she loves not having to wear a bra at home. You know that Jess does not feel the need to hide what she is thinking. This translates to her being honest and speaking the minds of her viewers who are in relatable circumstances or situations.
Yet the most important component of Jess’s character is that she fully embraces who she is as a person. Jess understands that she isn’t perfect and welcomes her flaws with arms wide open. She does not allow anyone’s opinions of her to change who she is as an individual and shows off her quirky personality to the world in front of her.
Thank you, Jess Day, for reminding us to love people with a full heart, stand up for what we believe in, speak our minds and to embrace our awkwardness.
