Who's Ready For Spring?!

Dreary weather phase in New England

Who’s ready for that time of year when you can hear the sound of birds chirping, the sun is shining and everyone is out and about on campus?

I know I am!

Going to college in New England requires everyone to know about the weird and in between weather point that usually occurs at the end of March and beginning of April. It is warm one week and then freezing, raining, and dreary the next; the weather is unpredictable and usually not in our favor. It can be extremely difficult to stay motivated when all you want to do is curl up in bed because it is damp outside and the sun seems nearly impossible to find in the sky.

I feel like I catch myself daydreaming of the warm weather to come when I get bored in class because I am so over the cold weather. This time of year students seem to melt down into a slump because we are all in dire need of some sunshine and vitamin D.

Research has proven that people are much happier and ready to accomplish things in life when the sun is out because the sun creates a happy mood. Everyone loves those spring days that you can walk around with sunglasses, a t-shirt, jeans and flip-flops (of course without it being too hot).

Campuses around New England even have a dreary look to them because the snow piles are full of dirt or the grass is still soaked from all the sun melting. Students are walking around with their jackets, usually looking down at the sidewalk, because who wants to be looking up at clouds that don’t even form cool shapes during this awkward phase?

Although this is one of the hardest parts of going to school in New England, you have to keep a positive mind and think about how within a week or two you’ll be able to walk outside with only a light jacket or long sleeve shirt and all the activities that come along with the nice weather. From hammocking, to slacklining, to hiking, to just being able to run outside with obtaining frostbite, we are so close to being able to do these things. Now is the time to bang out all of our work and put in that extra effort with our classes, so once those nice days finally arrive, we can take some time for ourselves and revive our lives with sunshine.

Spring is one of the best times of the year because it is warm, but not too hot. It is sunny and you know that summer is right around the corner, meaning NO SCHOOL WORK to deal with!

So yes, although this somber period is hard to get through, just keep that open mind about all the amazing events that will be arising during spring. Even just think about how nice it is going to be when we can walk to class without being blown away by the wind or having to wear layers on layers. We are almost there!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
