Who's Ready For Another New England Winter?

Are we ever really ready for this?

Who's Ready For Another New England Winter?
Emma Griffin

As I’m sitting here writing this, I’m stuck inside on a snowy day, the first of many to come in 2017. For right now, all is right in the world according to me. I feel no need to go anywhere, do anything, or even think about anything at the moment, I’m just enjoying my day off from everything in the world. Sitting in bed in a big sweatshirt and drinking hot coffee and cocoa is good enough for me today. After a couple of our infamous Nor’easters, however, being stuck inside all day with nothing to do gets to be too much for me to handle.

Some days all you want is to have a lazy and cozy snow day. Not having to go to work, getting to watch your favorite movies, or reading for a while with no worries of what else you could do with your day all seem to be such a great thing. Everyone knows that snow days are a great way to take advantage of a good hill for sledding to pass the time as well. Oh, it all seems so perfect and relaxing right now. And, for the first couple storms this is how the feeling is for most people (unless they still have to work which just makes this next part even worse.)

When it gets to be the end of January or beginning of February and it seems like we’ve been stuck inside for months on end, though, these snow days that we dreamt of start to turn into a nightmare. All you want to do is go out, anywhere and everywhere, and be out of the house long enough to breathe. Even if it’s for 20 minutes, you just need to escape the walls of your house that seems to be holding you hostage. You can’t bear another day of watching the same five shows on TV. Nothing can seem to keep you busy long enough for the storm to finally be over, not even your favorite pastimes. Not to mention, we’ve probably shoveled two or three times our weight in snow by the time January ends. (On the bright side, at least this is a good reason to skip the gym for a couple days.) New Englanders know all of this pain far too well, as sad as it is for us to admit.

So, I’m not sure how anyone else is feeling right now, but I’m not sure I’m ready for another unpredictable, record-breaking winter here in New England. The only way to get past it is to deal with it. Since we’re only just entering January, the end is too far for us to see but just think of all the humid and miserably days we’ll have in just a matter of months. For now, enjoy your lazy days in your favorite cozy spot because in a couple months it won’t be so enjoyable anymore. We’ve done it before, we can do it again.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
