What society expects from you and your true identity are two different concepts. Oftentimes in society, people see certain roles and they expect something out of those people. Recently, a close friend of mine has been going through a bit of an identity crisis. As a college student who is also in Greek Life, she has a hard time differentiating who she has always been with who she is in relation to her college life. College has a lot of distractions and especially being a young, pretty girl who is also in a sorority, she has faced many distractions. At times, it can feel like she has lost who she is altogether and she hardly remembers the girl she supposedly always was. This is a perfect example of society forcing a role onto someone. People ask her why she has changed so much or why she feels so emotionally drained suddenly. The truth is, having people constantly putting you in a corner as who they think you should be can be exhausting. Women are sexualized so much when they’re young and this starts to end as they get older. The sad thing is that the time when they are most fragile is the time when they are viewed as most sexualized. Without really meaning to, men make women think they need to be a certain way as young, college women. The party-culture is such a big deal and when a guy parties like crazy, that is just expected, but when a girl does it, she is trashy or has some kind of problem. Life can have so many struggles for young women and I do feel that sensitivity is not seen as important anymore. My friend sometimes becomes so confused about how men should talk to her and she really cannot tell what is normal anymore. It is so easy to get lost in what you think your role should be in college because it becomes this little world that is yours and you know nothing else. There is a real world out there though, and although it is easy to get lost, there is no certain role any of us should ever have to fill. The best we can do is be ourselves, even if we aren’t entirely sure what that means yet.
