If you watch TV or have gone to the movies recently, you must have seen the commercial for Axe, the male fragrance brand. This one is a little different from the normal commercials, which usually depict women flocking to men after they shower with the product. This ad goes through the different men, and how they appreciate their nose, or their suit, or "the fire". And they don't worry about not having a six pack abs, or the perfect body, because they have their one thing that is unique to them.
I think this ad is really important. It teaches body positivity and positivity in yourself. If you can pick one thing you like about yourself and focus on it, you'll realize that you're the only one who can rock whatever it is like you do.
Maybe you have a baby face, and then you know you'll always look young. If you have a gap in your teeth, you have the London look that is so popular on the runway. At the risk of sounding Dr. Suess-y, there is nobody you-er than you. So every standout trait you have is pretty unique to you. You wear your curly, crazy hair better than anyone else could. Maybe you have lots of freckles; they add a level of uniqueness to you. So if you have one dimple, a cleft chin or are really tall, you should embrace your differences; there's only one you, and that's pretty damn special.
There has been a wave of body positivity recently: the plus-sized model in Sports Illustrated, Megan Trainor's songs about being a curvier girl. A search on Google turns up about 18.7 million hits on body positivity and for good reason. Millennials are starting up a push to be comfortable in your own skin and to love your body, and it's paying off. More and more, people of all shapes and sizes are feeling comfortable in their own skin. It might have started with women, but it's extending to men, too.
I've said before that there is a quiet brilliance in people who love themselves, and I truly think that we could all learn something from the ad that many over look. Because really, after all, you don't need some other thing, when you have your thing.
