In February of 2016, The Fine Brothers uploaded a reaction video that caught my attention. One of the top videos that made the Fine Brothers as famous as they are on YouTube was their reaction videos.
In these videos, they take a cluster of people, usually consisting of people they know or other prominent YouTubers, and make them watch a video that would spark an entertaining response. It’s actually a lot more fun to watch then it sounds. A spin on this idea was to try to get the stars of the video shown on their channel to react to the reactions of the people who are reacting to the original video. I know, it’s all very meta.
But this video was different. The artist reacting was named That Poppy. She is a YouTube personality and also a singer/song writer. What made it so different was that Poppy stuck to her character. All she said was “I’m Poppy,” and that’s it. So, I decided to check out her YouTube channel.
My first sense was to get freaked out. The background music is suspenseful and creepy and that coincides with the gibberish that Poppy is speaking. She dresses in bright colors, but speaks in a soft voice and comes off as stiff. It was all very weird, and I decided to keep it on the back burner to freak out friends and relatives to see what their reactions were.
Then I noticed she had a song called Low Life. In the song, she sung about controlled by the dollar bill, ate dinner with the devil, and praised the illuminati. She is wearing a shirt with multiple eyes on it, that is called the Eye of Providence, and is a symbol of the illuminati. I was still a little creeped out until it all started to click in my head. This is all sarcasm. Her imagery is playing with the fact that many famous people connect themselves with the illuminati. In the song she even says that ‘this is the only way to get famous.’
Going back into her videos, I started listening to what she had to say. In her song “Everybody Wants to be Poppy,” her lyrics go as follows:
“All the people all around want to know what to look like, what to think and where to go. I’m not here to tell you what to say or be, why does everybody just like me?”
This is a stab at commercialism in society and obsessions with celebrities are not so great. This is expressed with that stiff tone she has. In her most recent video released on May 13, entitled “The Snap,” Poppy says “I love you more than anything. Keep listening. Can you still hear me?” If you scroll down on the description of the video it has a link to purchase “The Gospel of Poppy” which is a book on sale for $16. Poppy is also signed to the record label Island Records.
Also in the bio are the names Samantha Burkhart and Titanic Sinclair. Burkhart is credited as her stylist, and Sinclair as her director. Burkhart is a celebrity stylist with the Only.Agency. Her bio on the Only.Agency website said that she has worked with Sia, Ke$ha, and Shia Labeouf among others."Styling is just as much about being a curator or an editor as it is about being a creator,” she said at the end of her bio, “My goal is to always have my clients look timeless, flawless, and elevated, while feeling beautiful and confident in what they are wearing.”
Sinclair also has a YouTube channel that is much like That Poppy’s. He is more blunt that Poppy when talking about social conciseness. “People want to understand celebrities for some reason and I’m obsessed with the way they treat them like gods,” Sinclair said. If you go to titanicsinclair.com, he has posted past videos he has made along with a link to his Instagram. Upon going to the site, your cursor will turn into nothing else but the illuminati symbol. Sinclair may be the inspiration behind the whole Poppy character. While he can be creative behind the camera, Poppy, who looks like an innocent girl, became the face of this whole movement Sinclair has created.
Both Poppy and Sinclair both have had videos that have either been taken down or set to private. Poppy used to do song covers on her own separate channel, but it seems that those videos have been taken down by Poppy and her production company. Proof of this is by a video she did with Sam Pepper in 2013, before the Poppy channel had posted its first video. Other videos that try to break down Poppy videos have said that she is adamant about sticking to her character with zero trace of her former self.
