With young people more into politics than ever before, it's no surprise we're finally getting more representation in government. So, who is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez?
1. Not too long ago, she was a bartender
Because of this she considers herself part of the working class.
2. She never thought she would be able to run for congress
In an interview with Now This, she explains that because of the millions of dollars it takes to campaign — our system isn't designed to allow working-class Americans to hold a position in office.
3. She is super smart
Ocasio-Cortez grew up in New York, and in high school, she won second prize in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and got an asteroid named after her.
She attended Boston University with a John F. Lopez Fellowship, and she was the National Hispanic Institute's Lorenzo de Zavala Secretary of State. In college, she was an intern at the immigration office of U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy. She graduated cum laude and received a bachelor's degree in international relations with a minor in economics.
4. She is a socialist
In an interview with Vogue, she said, "The democratic participation in our economic dignity, and our economic, social, and racial dignity." "It is about direct representation and people having power and stake over their economic and social wellness, at the end of the day."
"To me, what socialism means is to guarantee a basic level of dignity." "It's asserting the value of saying that the America we want and America we are proud of is one in which all children can access a dignified education." "It's one in which no person is too poor to have the medicines they need to live. It's to say that no individual's civil rights are to be violated."
5. She has no problem standing up for her beliefs
