Kate Upton might have had the best baseball tweet of the year by calling out the baseball writers for not awarding her fiancé Detroit Tiger's pitcher Justin Verlander with the Cy Young Award. Every year, for the American and National league, the award is presented to the best pitcher to honor them on the season they had. This year, the National League's voting was not close as Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals dominated the contention. However, for the American League it was a different story as going into the voting the leading contender was Rick Porcello because of his 22 win season, but when looking at each individual statistic specifically it tells a different story.
With wins dominating the votes as the most important stat it is important to realize that Porcello also had the highest run support over 3 more runs per game than Verlander. Also a big part of why Porcello was awarded the Cy Young was because he allowed three or fewer earned runs in 27 of his 33 starts, while Verlander allowed 2 earned runs or fewer in 23 of his 34 starts a league best. Verlander also went 1-1 with (14 2/3 innings) giving up only 1 run and his ERA dropped from 3.21 to 3.04. The reason this is important because that stretch happened in the final week of the season where one of the voters, who left Verlander off his ballot had already submitted his votes. Besides the fact Verlander was left off of two ballots by writers their was no real question he had the best year in the American league. Porcello beat him in wins, but Verlander led the league in starts, strikeouts, WHIP, BAA, Innings, WAR-P, and tied Porcello in WAR. There should have been no doubt that Verlander had the best year, and most writers agreed with that because he had the most first place votes out of all the other contestants. The writers messed up on this one like in my opinion how when they picked Ryan Braun over Matt Kemp in the 2011 MVP race. Sadly, thats baseball writers will be influenced by team success and won't look at the numbers right in front of them. This is the second time Verlander has lost the Cy Young award by less than five points. Hopefully the writer's are held more accountable to award the most deserving player. This entrie rant is also coming from a Red Sox fan.
