I really, honestly, truly, to the core of my being do not care one little bit that Usain Bolt has apparently cheated on his girlfriend. (Okay I care a little bit, just because cheating isn’t cool.) The whole rest of the world really seems to care about Bolt’s infidelity though. Why?
We are all obsessed with celebrities. The idea of celebrity, the physical appearance of a celebrity, the character of a celebrity, their personal lives, their public lives, where they had their first kiss when they were thirteen, whether or not they’re going to marry their current SO, whether or not they’re going to cheat on their current SO….
We are so obsessed with celebrities and their private lives that we sometimes even think we can control their choices. Is it because we want to be them so badly that we believe we could live their lives better than them? Probably.
Here’s the thing: We do not control other people. We do not have that right or ability. A celebrity is not subjecting their self to our control by agreeing to be in the public eye. As much as we might admire them, celebrities are not superhuman, godlike creatures who are above regular human activity. (Again, not condoning infidelity, but it does happen).
Usain Bolt is a perfect example. Probably 30% of what I’ve seen online today has been criticizing Usain Bolt for cheating on his girlfriend. I’ve also seen articles about the woman he slept with and the fact that his girlfriend so far has not publicly responded to the incident.
Elite Daily first published this article “Rio Student Shares Photos Of Herself In Bed With Usain Bolt – Who Has GF”. They included pictures of a girl named Jady Duarte which she and Bolt had taken in bed together. (I refuse to share these pictures because again, I really don't care about Usain Bolt's personal life.)
Elite Daily published this article at 7:21 in the morning, not too long before I woke up. I follow Elite Daily on Facebook and like most people, Facebook is one of the first things I look at in the morning. So that’s how I started my morning. Yes, that was definitely the news I was interested in seeing.
Later on I saw this headline: “Usain Bolt’s GF Breaks Her Silence On Twitter Following The Cheating Drama”, again from Oliver McAteer over at Elite Daily. I’m really not trying to shame Oliver McAteer, because he seems like a lovely writer, I’m just wondering why on earth the man even has such a large audience for this stuff.
This whole second article detailed the support which Kasi Bennett has received from her Instagram followers. What did Kasi tweet you ask? A funny picture. A funny picture that probably has nothing to do with Usain Bolt cheating on her.
So here’s my real question for all of you people who are just so fascinated by this situation: If you were the one being cheated on, would you want the whole world to know? I really want you to think about that. Don’t just say that you’re not a celebrity and this would never happen to you, think about it on a smaller scale. What if every single person you know, suddenly found out that your SO cheated on you? That would not be fun.
