One of the most iconic celebrity couples decided to call it quits a few weeks ago. Angelina Jolie, an Oscar-winning actress, filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, another Oscar winner, on September 19, 2016. Jolie cited "irreconcilable differences" in her divorce filing and asked for physical custody of their six children. The what seems as an abrupt decision to call for the demise of the all holy Brangelina. The two, along with their children, Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 8, are required to attend individual counseling as part of a temporary custody agreement the two came to terms with earlier this week. But why should the general public care about the loss of spark between two individuals? Why is it that, as a society, we place celebrities on such a high level of worthiness that we continue to ignore much larger issues in the world?
An interesting development in the case of the dissolving relationship of Brangelina was the notion that Jennifer Aniston is living it up with her husband Justin Theroux. Well hate to break it to y'all, but she does not care one little bit, and neither does her husband. Theroux, in reference to his wife being thrown into the mix of this chaos, “There’s an endless appetite for trash, apparently, though everyone would say that they don’t have that appetite. But I think a lot of people do because people buy it. But there are bigger things to bitch about. It’s shocking how much bandwidth things can take up when there are far more important things going on in the world.”
Should we care about Brangelina? Not really. It is normal to feel a little remorse for the couple, but then to think even more about the adjustment the children will have to face, even through the public eye, is horrendous. And as people who automatically update their news feed to get the latest news, we supply the gas to the fire the media provides. The whole situation should not have been blown out of proportion, but what is even worse is that we accept this type of news. Pop culture can be a good indication as to what we value as a society, but the whole concept of observing this culture is to never get fully involved. That would literally be entering into the lives of other people, so just enjoy from afar and pay attention to the news that could affect the world's future.
