Who Are We Really At War With?

The war on race and culture, internally and externally.

Who Are We Really At War With?

Our country is being pulled in several directions with the war on race and culture. ISIS wants to destroy us as well as others around the world whom do not share their beliefs and others internally want to destroy their fellow countrymen.

Many understand that with a peaceful protest, they will be able to state their reasoning and concerns in a calm and organized manner so that others will stop to listen and either join in, pass the message along, or at least change their views. Others however, take a more violent approach.

We all mourn for the unlawful deaths that occur in our country. No one should need to die trying to do what they feel is right. The Dallas police officers that were injured and killed in last night’s peaceful protest against the unlawful killings of Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Louisiana.

According to what I have seen on BBC News, Philando Castile of Minnesota was reaching for his license when he was shot in his vehicle with his girlfriend also inside and bled to death. There is a video of the aftermath of the shooting here for your viewing.

Also according to BBC News, Alton Sterling of Louisiana was shot in the chest and back after being wrestled to the ground. There is a video here showing the confrontation and towards the end you can hear the gunshots.

Whatever confrontation had happened before each incident with the victim or the Officer is now irrelevant. People should be able to follow an Officer's instructions and Officers must have the understanding and remain in control to keep whomever they are investigating and those around them safe in every possible way. I am not saying that one person in either incident was right, what I am saying is that the unlawful violence needs to end and we as the “bigger” generation must be the ones to lead by example.

The killing and injuring of the Officers in Dallas, Texas was an unneeded act of anger towards a single group of people; white Officers. These Officers has nothing to do with the victims in Louisiana or Minnesota and now, it is not only their department that will mourn for them, but also five individual families that will mourn and the families of those that were injured.

From the statements seen on BBC News, this was meant to be a peaceful protest and the Officers were there to protect. The four lone gunmen decided to take matters into their own hands and continued this prejudice rampage our country has fallen into. Let our generation be the ones who will change this nation and launch the nation and its people into a peaceful society.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
