Freshly off the press today: "Donald Trump plans to replace VA secretary with personal Physician" (CNN). Last week, the story was McMaster's was being ousted. Around a month ago it was Tillerson getting the boot, and has everyone forgot Anthony Scaramucci? Scaramucci was fired within a whooping ten days! This style of management, to anyone with real organizational experience, is quite disconcerting. We have seen over twenty Cabinet members resign, or be replaced.
It is reasonable at this point to believe that this President Trump's preferred style of management. The Apprentice is the model for how he wishes the West Wing to be run. There seems to be no room for discussion, compromise, or even an opposing viewpoint that contradicts his. In the case of former Secretary of State Tillerson, President Trump did not agree with his views on diplomacy - - particularly regarding North Korea. As soon as the news broke that there had been an impasse between the two men, the news of his termination came soon after.
Some may believe that this is not harmful. Truthfully, those are the same people that do not have a problem with our President paying off prostitutes. The fact that our Chief Executive has the inability to maintain a stable-organizational structure will become more than a headline. A trend one might notice (especially with the recent news) is that he has always nominated his colleagues or business partners. Linda McMahon, former CEO of the World Wrestling Entertainment organization, is prime example of how Trump has nominated Cabinet Members based on friendship. This "non-merit based appointing style" has caused the wheel house of employment we see now. President Trump realizes that he has chosen specific members for shallow, back-scratching reasons. He then is forced to remove these given members, subsequently appointing another friend to do the job.
The overarching point to this piece is that this will continue to happen, and may cause dire circumstances in our executive branch. As the President continues down this path, he will appoint less qualified and more volatile individuals. He will run through his trove of trusty cronies, removing them as he finds they are not fit. Eventually, a major Cabinet position, such as the National Security Advisor, will be held by someone that is incredibly dangerous. This will lead to a miscarriage of duties. Being that John Bolton has just been nominated for this job, I think we are well on our way.
