"Oh. My God. Did you see her, she's soooo basic."
Growing up in a world where if you're like everyone else you're boring, and if you're different you're labeled weird, it can be hard to find where you belong.
Between all the different cliques in high school like jocks, preps, or nerds there was always a place that made you feel safe and like yourself. But as high school ends more times than not you lose your group and begin to find out who you really are.
Unless you're a white girl like me.
No, I didn't choose to be this way, and odds are you didn't either, but somehow we both found ourselves in this stigma. Choosing between a mani/pedi, or whether the weather is cold enough to pull out the UGGs its all in our handbook they hand out at orientation.
White Girl (n.) any white girl in America who is obsessed with any of the following: leggings, UGGs, Starbucks, Autumn, iPhones, Instagram, Twitter, selfies, or the movie Mean Girls.
So if you're obsessed with any of the following you may want to reconsider who you really are, because you may just have to join the group of blonde girls waiting in line at Starbucks gossiping over their selfies on Instagram.
And no while being a white girl isn't a bad thing, it sure does get a lot of hate. Clinging to a bunch of stereotypes like that we're ignorant, self-centered, or dumb. I would beg to differ! Us white girls are way bigger, better and beyond those things. We are confident, headstrong young women that share our radiant smiles with the world in hopes of making others smile.
Being a white girl also has its many perks. While many feel lost trying to find where they fit in in the world, we already have our spot. Instantly connecting with other white girls over our favorite filters, we've somehow made a friend and gotten another follower on Twitter.
I say being a white girl isn't a bad thing and something to hide. When people comment about how basic I am I embrace it! "I am a white girl and proud!" I say when someone comments about how I wore leggings, my North Face and UGGS yesterday and the day before that.
The key to being a white girl is to have confidence in your basic-ness. Because again it isn't a bad thing, it's just where you fit in best and can be who you truly are.
WHO'S WITH ME WHITE GIRLS?!
** As a disclaimer I'd like to partially blame my parents for making me a white girl, as I was their only daughter and the middle child. But as a white girl, I have accepted my responsibility to keep up to date with the latest iPhone's and make sure I always have a Starbucks cup in my hand when I'm out in public.**
