Which Lives Matter?

When did it become a competition of whose life is more valuable?

Which Lives Matter?
Eric Garner

Every morning before work, I watch the news along with probably a million other Americans. I can’t even count on one hand how many times I started off my morning with hearing the news of another shooting. This time, it was in Louisiana. This time, it was three police officers. This is becoming the norm in our country. Dallas, Minnesota, Baton Rouge, Orlando, Ferguson, what do all of these places have in common? In all of these places, there was a shooting. At least one person died in all of these places.

Now, I don’t know all of the details for all of these shootings, and we may never know all the details. But, because of the lack of information for many of these shootings, people are outraged. We hear on the news almost every week, “An unarmed black man was shot and killed.” I am sure that pretty much everyone that hears this is upset. We are told that the police are here to protect us. So, I can understand why so many people are upset when they hear the people that are supposed to be protecting them are out there shooting someone they love.

I am sure everyone in America is aware of the movement that has come about because of this frustration, or rather movements. The black lives movement was created by people who were sick of the unexplainable deaths of their loved ones by police just because of their skin color. I’m not a heartless human being, I support this movement. There is too many shootings, too many unexplained shootings. I’m not going to pretend like I know exactly how the families’ of Michael Brown or Alton Sterling feel because I have no idea. But I am still upset. I am upset because there are too many questions left unanswered. I am upset because this is becoming normal.

As I said before, the black lives matter movement isn’t the only movement that has come out of these shootings. Somebody’s ego got struck and thought that the black lives matter movement meant that these people believe that only the lives of black people matter. These people thought that needed to start their own movement in response to the black lives matter movement. This is where the all lives matter movement was created. People wanted to let the black lives matter movement that their movement is bullshit because it’s not including all lives. It’s just talking about the lives of black people.

This is where the all lives matter movement is wrong. The black lives matter was not created to insult the lives of white people, far from it. It wasn’t created to let everyone know their lives have more value than other people’s lives. No, this movement was created to let everyone know that they are sick and tired of their loved ones being gunned down with little to no explanation.

I understand the all lives matter movement, I do. These people are frustrated because they think their lives are being devalued by the black lives matter movement. They want the black lives matter movement to know that is not just black lives that matter. They have been trying to make that message loud and clear. What they don’t get though, the black lives matter was created by people that were hurt. They wanted a change. They wanted the police brutality to stop. They wanted their voices to be heard.

I saw a meme after the shootings in Minnesota and Baton Rouge. It showed two houses. The first house was perfectly fine, the second house was on fire. There was a man with a fire hose spraying the first house and saying, “All houses matter!” If you couldn’t guess, the house on fire is a symbolism for the black lives matter. The fire shows how they are hurting. The house that is fine is a symbolism for the all lives matter movement. They are getting the water even though they aren’t on fire and hurting. They are getting the water because the man said that all houses matter. Not just the one that is on fire, but the one next to it that is perfectly fine.

I’m not here to say which movement is more justified than the other. I am here to tell everyone that there is a problem in our country and we are so divided that it’s never going to stop. I understand that people are frustrated and pissed off that there are so many unanswered questions right now, what I don’t understand is the way some people are acting on their frustrations. You can have your rallies, and protest, that’s your right. I will support that 100%. What I don’t support is the people that wanted to take their frustrations out on the police in Dallas. I understand these people were upset over the shootings in Minnesota and Baton Rouge, I am too. That doesn’t mean you get a sniper and start shooting all the white cops in your city. These people are fighting fire with fire.

There’s been so much hatred in our country for too long. I’m not sure if there will be a day anytime soon where I don’t hear, “There’s been another shooting” on the morning news. What people need to realize is that not all black people are thugs, not all white people are out to get black people, not all cops are bad cops. If we don’t start realizing this soon, these shootings will be occurring more and more often. So, you can support whichever movement you want, but just remember, black, white, Hispanic, gay, and straight, we are all human, and we all want to see a change for the better of our country.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
