Recently I was chatting it up with one of my friends that goes to Texas Tech about how Oklahoma State apparently steals all of their wonderful traditions from other schools. Of course my immediate response was to defend OSU because every good Cowboy fan is loyal and true. Once I did my own research into these wild accusations, I found some interesting facts about my beloved brightest orange.
One will notice the striking similarities that the Cowboys and Red Raiders share. We both freely use our "pistols firing" hand symbol which Tech likes to don as "guns up"....as if. Here comes Bullet, anyone? Our rider is a dead ringer for Tech's masked rider, who they prize more than gold. If you look at OSU's alumni website, you will find that we adopted our original mascot, the tiger, and black and orange colors from Princeton University. Way back in that day, we even called ourselves the "Princeton of the Plains." Following that logic, all of us attend an Ivy League school, right?
Apparently the "waving wheat" symbol came from Kansas, which makes a lot of sense because their entire state is nothing but wheat. Let the haters talk, but our university was founded way before Texas Tech, which means that our traditions came first. Although OSU did not adopt our beloved Pokes until the 1950s, the Red Raider did not surface until the 1970s. In your face Tech, am I right?
Either way you look at it, both OK State and Tech have loyal and loving fan bases who like to believe what they will about the controversy of the stolen traditions.
