The iconic bright yellow smiley face with its signature drop of blood calls out to comic book fans everywhere. Contrasting the stereotypically extraordinary, power-fueled superheroes, Watchmen (with the exception of Dr. M of course) is filled with - well, rather mundane people. Nothing is really special about these vigilantes besides their unusual hobby of throwing on some tights and a mask to stop a few bad guys, and yet they managed to change the world. Rorschach is a cruel, no nonsense, kick-ass who takes no mercy on anyone. Sally Jupiter and her daughter destroyed all ideas of the "fragile women" mantra by capturing criminals...in heels. And of course the instigator of it all, The Hangman, who just wanted to make a difference in the world. Even though the Keene Act outlawed the Watchmen, making a few of them retire and return to "normal" jobs, they held back in the shadows waiting for when they were needed once again.
In light of recent events, the world has been asking, where's our Watchmen? Where is our knight in shinning armor to stop the never ceasing injustice? Some shrug, claiming we're already well protected and point to police officers and heads of states, people corrupted by both power, status, and money. They're the ones who are supposed to make a difference - right? No. Just like in Watchmen, it's the "normal" people. It's the people who actually listen to the world's cries, who understand that for change to happen it must start with a disturbance. It's the people protesting for human rights in countries far crueler than our own. It's the women standing up and demanding for equality in their work place. it's the people talking, tweeting, and sharing about their unhappiness with their governments. It's those who are taking a stand at the Dakota Access Pipeline, marching in Black Lives Matter movements and calling attention to the things that make others cringe and turn away.
No, we may not have a group of crime fighting activists in to tight outfits and silly catchphrases, but yes we do have our own superheroes, our own Watchmen. The people who care and who are fighting. The people who are making even the littlest voices be heard. They are the ones changing the world.
