In modern Christian culture, there exists a spectrum of theological doctrine. Similar to American politics, there is a left, and a right, a liberal and a conservative hermeneutical approach to worshipping God, interpreting the Bible, structuring a church, and such things as these.
For myself, I grew up in a conservative Christian atmosphere. Although it was more moderate than the church would like to admit, my church family rejected liberal theology, such as speaking in tongues, a separation of salvation and the Baptism of the Spirit, physical healing and prophesy, and women in ministry. And when I began attending a Pentecostal University, my mind felt like it was going to blow up from the constant theological confusion. Should I defend what I grew up with to the point of rejecting all else? Or should I open my mind to the things the charismatic church offers?
My answer was this: discernment.
The gift of discernment is as exciting and rewarding as Christmas morning. The wisdom that comes from it is rich as gold, and tough as diamonds. When one asks the Spirit for discernment, Heaven rejoices and God is joyful because He sees His children loving Him with their minds.
However, just like everything else, humanity taints discernment because of patriotism to doctrinal traditions. And my fear is discernment soon can lead to doubt.
Let me explain. In my own experience, I came to this liberal Pentecostal institution with a set conservative heart. And I met both push back and confusion, and soon it turned to bitter doubt. I would say, “God wouldn’t have that in His community” or, “God didn’t purpose that” or, “God didn’t mean that in the scriptures.” I decided to doubt the power of God because I was taught otherwise.
Now listen to me, discernment is a wonderful thing. Ask for it. Seek the wisdom of the Lord. And use your mind to love God. But don’t let it hold you back from believing in the works of the Holy Spirit. There are specific theological concepts that must be dealt with carefully, but God will always move the way He decides to. So look out for Him with a discerning mind and a believing heart. Be careful of what you believe, but don’t doubt the power of God.
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
