Where You're At Is Okay

It's a bit of a confusing time.

Being 20, and into your early twenties, is a bit of a confusing time. It's one of those times where you feel and think you should already be established and have a job with steady income, and living on your own. But in all reality, you're either away for school and barely getting by, or you're working your ass off every week because you have bills to pay. Whichever one it is - it's rough. But, one thing you need to remember: You don't need to be anywhere fancy right now. You don't NEED to be worrying about moving out, working full-time, and paying all types of bills. YOU'RE IN YOUR PRIME! LIVE IT!

Instead of growing up so quickly, we should be focused on making the most of our youth. We should be traveling and seeing what the Earth has to offer before settling down. We should be going out with friends and making memories while we can. We should be dating - finding what we're going to want in the future. Working different jobs to see what we want to do in our future - and having fun in those jobs to keep ourselves from being stressed out in the years to come. We should be laughing. We should be playing. We should be loving and living.

We shouldn't feel like we NEED to be getting married right now, but that's how it seems. I'm 19 and all of my friends are getting married and having babies (nothing wrong with that! I love weddings and babies). And that's not what I'm saying, I'm saying that we shouldn't feel like that's what we HAVE to be doing at our age. If that's what we want, then hell yeah - go and do it. If you would rather go stay at your BFF's house and eat a big bowl of ice cream AND a slice of cheesecake while watching "Grey's Anatomy" or "American Horror Story" all night then why not do that? Or, if you would rather go out and party like it's your 21st birthday every night without a care in the world then listen when I say this... GO DO IT!

Stop feeling like you should be doing something more at this age. We have plenty of time to grow up, but that time shouldn't have to be right now. We have the opportunity right now to be able to work either part-time or full-time and still have so much free time that we can make the most of our weekends. 18-21, dude just go live. We have responsibility but nothing nearly like what it's going to be in a few years. So let's enjoy the age we're at. Don't worry about what other's think or are judging you for right now - they have no choice on what you do. You are the ruler of your own happiness.

Where you're at in life is okay.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
